Choosing a Direct Sales Opportunity

Direct selling companies have been around now for a little over a decade. What distinguishes them from Network Marketing and MLM is that the distributor gets paid directly when the sale is made. There are no commissions paid from the company. In some cases big producers may get a share of company profits.

Generally the most high profile direct sales companies deal in a product that costs over $1000. Some notable players in the field are Coastal Vacations, Liberty League International, Emerald Passport, Success University, and Mentors on a Mission.

People who are attracted to direct sales fall into a few different groups. Frustrated or burned out network marketers make up the first. They may be attracted to direct selling because it’s a generally simpler business model where its only necessary to get a few customers to prosper. People new to home business make up another group of direct sellers. These individuals are likely to be attracted to the generous, easily understood compensation plans used by direct sales companies. A third group would be comprised of experienced home business people looking for a simple business where they can make significant income working part-time.

Whichever group you fall into its important to understand that the product the company sells is only a part of what makes it a good opportunity. Most individuals who buy the entry level product will do so with at least the intention of selling a few units. Whether they do make sales or not is up to them.

One alarming trend that has emerged with internet recruiting for direct sales is what I will call the “stealing prospects” sales pitch. This is a situation where a successful distributor will entice a prospect away from signing with another distributor with the implication that the new associate is more likely to be wildly successful under his mentorship. How would you like to have your potential new customer taken away by a more experienced or “slick” distributor? Do your diligence to see which companies allow this kind of “sign-up under me” recruiting and which frown on it. With any opportunity who you sign up with is ultimately your decision , but the author is aware of only one direct sales company where “stealing prospects” is actively discouraged.

Anybody can look at a pay plan and get starry-eyed over the dollars to be made, but its important to also look at the cost of marketing the product. Generally, you will need to advertise or buy “opportunity seeker” leads to get started. If you choose to do online marketing, setting up an auto-responder (automatic email follow-up system) is essential. Don’t be surprised if online marketing is more complex that you expected. Little in the way of results will be produced by placing free ads advertising your opportunity. Paid advertising is the only sure way to target market to people who are actually looking, want the product, and have the resources to get started.

Buying leads is the subject of much debate. The best leads are no doubt the exclusive leads you will generate yourself with advertising, face-to-face prospecting, or automated marketing systems. Its easy to spend a lot of money purchasing lead packages when getting started and not get any sales with them. One reason for this is that a lot of the leads generated for the lead companies are not qualified for direct sales. Many people who fill out the lead capture forms the lead companies use are in a state financial desperation and you should be prepared to disqualify these prospects.

There are a few direct sales opportunities out there which promise to do a huge portion of the work for you. These claims are generally misleading and one should be aware that who you are on the phone is the primary determinant of your success in the industry. Systems which promise automated recruiting generally fail to mention that driving qualified traffic to your website is not always easy. Those who “crack the code” may be successful with these systems, but internet marketing novices will need to get some training and do real work to promote automated systems in the right places and to the right people.

Latest Mlm nonsense, just tried the Goji juice.?

Tried the Goji Juice with an open mind several times (and several dollars later) and found nothing positive to say as a result. I was told my negative attitude was blocking the ability for the Goji Juice to work becuase I didn’t “beleive” it would work. Now how is that? Suddenly this miracle juice is a faith based juice and works only if you are thinking positive? Not to mention, I drank it with a completely open mind because my aunt is caught up in this nonsense and I do in fact love her, so I tried it out. I would love nothing more than to find a tonic that does what those in Freelife suggest, but the reality is they ALL are convincing themselves of the product to justify being in their silly Mlm Business…isn’t this right?

The first problem is that your Aunt is selling a product on the notion of having medical qualifications when her only qualification was that she signed a distributorship with an Mlm Company.

Secondly, your Aunt probably told you about all sorts of amazing claims that their wonder tonic has, perhaps even some of their own. Your Aunt, however, naively thinks that just because there is a lot of hype around the product (misplaced because the hype is really about keeping them in MLM, not selling product), that the product must be great. Your Aunt was undoubtedly unable to come up with anyone other than family/friends of her own or other MLMers in with their company who could offer a positive review…ie. they have never heard an unbiased opinion on the product.

Your Aunt also undoubtedly told you about all sorts of medical research on the product that justifies how great it is, but just like MLMers in any other MLM company selling the latest “wonder tonic” (there are always new ones replacing the old ones), your Aunt naively forgot to read them closely and see that the reviews were specifically in regards to an ingredient in the product, not the product themselves. Goji makes up about 20% of the product, whereas the remaining is just juice. You are paying nearly $40 for 80% juice. If you read any review in an unbiased manner on Goji you will find that there is nothing more positive about Goji said than is said about tea leaves. Yet MLMers convince themselves that selling 20%tea/80% juice at $40 a bottle with totally unjustified claims is a smart business idea.

Lastly, just as in all Mlm Companies, those trying to convince you of their product/business are more driven by hype than by fact, more driven by potential than by results, and more driven by bias than any logical reasoning. MLMers will look flat in the face of logic and fact and assume the exact opposite because it justifies their naive dreams and because their upline coddles them and tells them the rest of the world is naive…this same upline who claims to be making all sorts of Mlm Money yet never shared any proof with their downline. Due diligence is like kryptonite to the MLMer. Quite laughable!

MLMers will inevitably follow me calling me the negative one, calling me the biased one, calling me the uneducated one…yet all I did was point out the obvious. You decide, although it sounds like you have already found out the truth.

Eventually your aunt will learn selling hype with the hope of a future fortune at the expense of family relationships and credibility isn’t quite worth it.

There is a lot of buzz going around the Network Marketing Industry lately about online vs. offline marketing and which concept is better. The leaders from each industry have been strongly stating their case as to why their concept is better. Both sides have strong and valid points which makes it tough to decide which one is better. But what if you didn’t have to choose a side? What if you could become involved with both concepts?

Offline marketing & Direct Selling companies have been around for years. Companies such as Amway, and Mary Kay created a massive boom in the industry using the concepts of direct selling. People learned about the powerful concept of residual income and became excited about the possibilities. There were a select few that made a lot of money from the direct selling craze, but most people ended up with nothing.

Over the years people started having a negative taste in their mouth about the direct selling industry. Terms such as “pyramid scheme” and “scam” began to surface.

Here’s the key thing to remember. The concept of residual income still stayed strong. Residual income wasn’t a “pyramid scheme” and it wasn’t a “scam.” Despite what people thought about the direct selling industry, no one could ever say anything negative about residual income.

The social media craze has caused a stir throughout the industry. Sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and YouTube are taking over the Internet.

Online marketers have a laser targeted focus on playing to the emotions of offline marketers. Their goal is to target offline marketers and play off of the negative emotions they are facing with their current businesses.

With online marketing everything is automated with very little human touch. Online marketers want people to enter their information into their “capture” page and then proceed to blast peoples email addresses with auto-responder messages.

“The money is in the list!” That holds true in both online marketing and offline marketing.

After reading this and seeing both sides of the fence, neither side seems appealing does it?

That’s because they aren’t working together! There is no “Synergy” working against each other.

Human contact is still the key to having long term and lasting success in the network marketing industry. People want to do business with other people, not with a computer.

Offline marketers need to start learning how to brand themselves and their businesses on the Internet if they want to succeed. If offline marketers don’t learn how to market their businesses and brand themselves using the major social media outlets, they are going to get eaten alive.

Having been in the industry for more than 5 years it is real easy to spot a fresh fish in the Network Marketing Industry. • decide whether and where to advertise and compile costs
• set realistic goals and targets

Another important factor is to decide whether your home business will generate immediate income, or whether you will need to consider bolting it on to your existing job or business until it does. By performing the simple exercises above, you will have a much better grasp of your likely earnings than if you start your business with no clear goals or plans.

Finally, a home based business is no different to a bricks & mortar business. It needs commitment and hard work to make it successful. Ask any small business owner how many hours they needed to put into their business when they first set up, and you might be overwhelmed by the answer.

Ask them if they would trade being their own boss to work for someone else, despite the hours, the headaches, the business planning, and everything else to boot, and in most cases you’ll get a resounding NO!

Part 2 Of 2 - Top Wordpress Plugins For Internet Marketers

Is it possible that you already had each plugin already working on your Wordpress blog? I decided to write that article (as well as this one) reviewing only the same plugins that I use on my own Wordpress blog.

To keep you waiting no longer, here is my list of the Top Wordpress Plugins for Internet Marketers - Part 2 of 2.

Onlywire For Wordpress -This is one of the plugins that I think you absolutely NEED to have working on your Wordpress blog. After you upload the Onlywire plugin to your blog, it will instantaneously add your post to the different social bookmarking sites that you select. All that you need to do is make sure that the little check box under your blog post is marked before you hit “submit” in your Wordpress backoffice.

Sociable - The Sociable Plugin is another social bookmarking gadget to have so that your readers will be able to share your posts with the rest of the world. It works a lot like Onlywire, except that each “bookmark” you make is done individually instead of all at once.


TweetMeme Retweet Button - The TweetMeme plugin allows you to easily use the TweetMeMe button in your WordPress blog posts so that you can automatically Tweet your blog post after you post it.



WP Super Cache - WP Super Cache is a caching plugin for WordPress. The way that it works is that it generates html files that are placed on a server without processing comparatively heavy PHP scripts.

If you are experiencing a slow load time, by using this plugin you will speed up your WordPress blog significantly.



WP Greet Box - This is one cool gadget to your blog. Ha! I love this one.

This plugin will show a different greeting message to your new visitors depending on where they came from.

For example, when a Digg user clicks through from Digg, they will see a message reminding them to Digg your post. Or if they come from Twitter, they will see a message suggesting them to “Tweet” the post and follow you on Twitter.

You can also set a default greeting message for new visitors asking them to subscribe to your RSS feed.

And I just learned this after reading about the WP Super cache, but this plugin and WP Super Cache are compatible so you don’t have to sacrifice any site loading speed.



Akismet - If there were just ONE anti-spam plugin for you to use, this would be the one. Download it. Period. You will see your spam traffic decrease dramatically.

Tie it together with Simple Trackback Validation plugin below, and you’re golden!



WordPress.com Stats - This is one of the first plugins I downloaded onto my blog - so we go back a long time. Oh, the memories…

Enabling Wordpress stats to your blog will essentially be like it would if you were adding Akismet. You will need the same API key, so don’t lose it.

After you enable the Wordpress stats, it will start crunching the data and begin telling you where your traffic is coming from and going to within a few minutes to an hour.

Wordpress stats will also display all of your traffic information on just one page, as well as at the bottom of your dashboard page - but in a scaled down version.



Simple Trackback Validation - this plugin will check all of your incoming comments for spam links.

When a trackback is received, this plugin checks if the IP address of the sender is equal to the IP address of the webserver the link is referring back to. This will identify almost every spam link that spammers use with bots. Used in conjunction with Akismet, your blog should be near 100% spam free.
