The health science company of nutritional supplements known as USANA is an MLM, a Multilevel Marketing company. Is it a scam?
A scam is basically lying to people, giving someone an impression that is not accurate. Usana is a total scam in that they present all these earnings that all these reps are making but do not disclose the real numbers, do not disclose that their top reps are making more money from training materials and “other” company compensation than from their networks, etc. Anyone new to the opportunity would not know this and would simply look at the model and think it is possible.
No one is arguing here that you cannot make money or the system itself is at fault (that is an answer to a question you did not ask), but the money being represented is the scam, as it is not only not accurate, it is a blatant lie…in other words, a scam. Usana is badly known for this from anyone with inside knowledge of the top representatives who make all the claims.
Just because people fail does not make this a scam. People fail in all walks of life. But if I sold you a restaurant and gave you paper work stating how much business I had in the last 2 years, and that paperwork was blatantly and deliberately false, than that would be a scam…and that is in essence what is going on in Usana. The leaders will defend themselves by telling you that you should not listen to negative people or some people do not have what it takes (or any assortment of reasons to thwart your line of question) but the reality it none of it makes the scam any less of scam.

The answer to that question depends on who you ask. There are those who are very successful and those who are not. The “are nots” sometimes fall into the category that might think there is MLM dirt. Its interesting, though, if you ask someone who has not done well if traditional Multi-level Marketing is a scam they will probably say its not. It is usually their nephew or daughter or friend’s opinion that Mlm Is A Scam.
One thing I realized when I was involved in a rather large Network Marketing System is that it was the leaders that made the money. That’s not a bad thing. If you’re a leader you’re supposed to make money. I quit the business before I found out the secrets I needed to know.
This is what keeps most MLM’ers from success: Quitting before they figure out the secret. They get tired of hearing the “N” word: “No”. They might be driving a crummy car because they can’t yet afford the new fancy one their up line is driving. It is difficult to project success when your vehicle is from the previous century. They might have run out of people on their list.
Those who make the money are in it for the long run. If things start to go sideways they don’t quit, they adapt. They know how to train people to get their friends, family, people you know to a meeting and close the deal. They have positioned themselves to be the leader. Few Mlm Businesses teach their members to be leaders.
Building a Mlm Business like this can seem like an enormous task. One saying I heard a lot from my up line was, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” This is just another way of saying take baby steps and eventually you will accomplish the whole task. But who wants to eat an elephant anyway?
As distasteful as it may be, lets stay with that analogy for a minute. What if you could eat the whole thing at once? Forget the little bites. But what if you could be making money in your home based business within a few months, rather than years? There’s a better way than MLM.
Mlm Training usually consists of this: Make a list. Make a list of everyone you know, call them and get them to a meeting. Look at the world around you. I mean your world. How many people do you know? How many of those people have the potential to be business leaders? Of those people how many would be willing to join your business? If you really start to examine the numbers your market is pretty limited.
Lets look at another market segment. This is the world I live in to attract leads, prospects, leaders to my business. I don’t chase people on a list. I attract from a pool of people numbering more than 1.5 billion people from dozens of English speaking countries. I use the power of the internet to find the business leaders that can duplicate my efforts, while being mentored with cutting edge training on internet marketing. I typically don’t qualify these leads. They qualify themselves. I then decide of I want to place them on my team.
Wow! Did you see what just happened? This is the OPPOSITE of Multi Level Marketing! The opposite of what they teach and more money more quickly. AND I am dipping into a deep pool of potential talent. AND using the internet I can find the exact place in the pool I want to dive into. I can find the most likely candidates to attract.
You see, there is network marketing (MLM, etc.), affiliate marketing, and direct sales. MLM is what was discussed above. Affilitate sales is usually smaller transactions that over time will amount to some income. You sell other people stuff and earn a small commision from the sale. And again, there is nothing wrong with these systems.
But direct, top-tier sales is where the money is made. Commissions are made immediately and are usually pretty big. Not, 20 bonus points or $20 or $30. But these commissions can start at $50 and depending on the product go to $5,000 - $10,000 with one sale or upgraded sales.
In 2009 I was starting an online business and, looking back, had no clue of what I was doing. I had wasted a lot of time and a lot of money on bad products and bad advice. The turning point came when, later that same year, I ran across the solution that I employ today to work from home…or the beach, or where ever my laptop and mobile phone happen to be.
Direct selling is the new wave. Wave? No. Direct selling is a Tsunami. The internet has leveled the playing field for those who want to participate. If you have a product to sell great! Have a straight face and don’t be weak to other people otherwise they might take advantage of you.
In Network Marketing, there are many types of compensation plans. Unfortunately, many people do not take the time to study the advantages and disadvantages of each plan. Failing to do so can be a costly mistake and result a struggling MLM career. I failed to do this in one company and ended up quitting due to sheer frustration. Now, that I know what to look for, things have gotten much better.
Since you don’t want to end up like I was at one point (in the group of quitters), and to avoid wasting your time, effort, and money in a plan that won’t work for you, it is vitally important that you take the time to study your plan. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of four primary Network Marketing Compensation Plans.
1. Stair step breakaway. The advantage of this compensation plan is that you can go as wide as you want. If you have 50 people, everyone can be placed on your front line. If you have 5 out of the 50 people who are doing well and want to really build, you can build 5 legs underneath them and not really worry about what everyone else is doing.
The disadvantage of this plan is that if you place a heavy hitter under a dud, you won’t qualify for your company’s bonuses and commissions. Also, the fact that there is a break away component isn’t good. For example, if you have 5 legs with 10,000 worth of volume in each leg, when your downline reaches a particular volume, they can break away. Sometimes, this can be as much as 10-12% of your volume. Other times it can mean losing all the volume. This is not a pretty picture is it?
2. Matrix. Matrix’s can be 3×5’s, 5×7’s, 3×9’s, etc. For example, if you are in a 3×5 matrix, you can have 3 people on your frontline and can go 5 levels deep. Many times with a matrix, there will be a lot of talk about “spillover” which sounds wonderful to many people.
All the “spillover” talk leads right into the disadvantage of a matrix. You see, all the the “spillover” mumbo jumbo really promotes a welfare mentality. People think they won’t have to do any work. As professional network marketers, we know this is not the case! It’s not a “sit back and let all the people come sailing in” type of business. You have to build relationships and talk to people.
Another disadvantage of a matrix is that you have to guard your front line posistions very carefully. These posistions are really like gold. If you upline sponsor puts a dud in your frontline due to “spillover” and wants you to build for them because you are an awesome builder, you’re toast! Make sure nobody ever does this to you.
Also, it’s very likely that you will be able to build deeper than 5 levels. Unfortunately, with a matrix, you won’t get paid on volume for the levels that go below our example of 5. This is not a good thing at all!
3.Aussie 2-UP. I’m not sure where the word “aussie” comes from, as this doesn’t really have anything to do with Australia. Anyway, in this plan, you would give the first two people you sponsor to your upline. Everyone else you get to keep. The advantage of this type of plan? Hmmmm, let’s see. Zero!
Since the industry standard is that most people only sponsor just 2.7 people in their Network Marketing Company, can you imagine having to give them away right from the start?! Ouch! Now, if you are a hard-hitting, sponsor monster who loves to sell big ticket items as promoted by many aussie 2-ups, this is the plan for you. For the rest of us, this just doesn’t work.
Keep in mind as well that with aussie 2-ups, there really is no residual income. The day you stop selling is the day your income stops. So, carefully evaluate if this is the type of plan you want to commit to.
4. Binary. This plan promotes two legs. The advantage with this network marketing compensation plan is that it pays on volume and you can build the two legs as long as you want. The disadvantage is that you have to balance both legs and the pay is based on the legs being balanced.
I know you have probably heard people bragging about having thousands of people in their downline with this plan. What they don’t tell you is that they are barely making any money because all the people are in the strong leg. They also don’t tell you they are struggling to build since they can barely get the weak leg moving. Unbalanced legs equals no money! Keep this in m ind when you look at a Binary Mlm Compensation Plan.
As you can see, there are clear advantages and disadvantages with these four networking marketing compensation plans. Now that you know what they are, you can make an informed decision about what type of plan will work best for you.
