Multi-level marketing (MLM) also referred to as Network Marketing is a business distribution model that allows a parent Multi-level Marketing Company to market their products directly to consumers by means of relationship referral and direct selling.
Independent unsalaried salespeople of multi-level marketing referred to as distributors (associates, independent business owners, franchise owners, sales consultants, consultants, independent agents, etc.), represent the parent company and are rewarded a commission relative to the volume of product sold through each of their independent businesses (organizations). Independent distributors develop their organization by either building an active customer base, who buy direct from the parent company and / or by recruiting a downline of independent distributors who also build a customer base, expanding the overall organization. Additionally, distributors can also earn a profit by retailing products which they purchased from the parent company at wholesale price.
Distributors earn a commission based on the sales efforts of their organization, which includes their independent sale efforts as well as the leveraged sales efforts of their downline. This arrangement is similar to franchise arrangements where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchisor as well as to an area or region manager. Commissions are paid to multi-level marketing distributors according to the company’s compensation plan.
There can be multiple levels of people receiving royalties from one person’s sales.
It is sometimes difficult to distinguish legal and reputable MLMs from illegal pyramid or Ponzi schemes. Mlm Businesses operate in the United States in all 50 states and in more than 180 other countries worldwide, and new businesses may use terms like “affiliate marketing” or “home-based business franchising”. However, many pyramid schemes try to
In the most Legitimate Mlm Companies, commissions are earned only on sales of the company’s products or services. No money may be earned from recruiting alone (”sign-up fees”), though money earned from the sales of members recruited is one attraction of MLM arrangements. If participants are paid primarily from money received from new recruits, or if they are required to buy more product than they are likely to sell, then the company is a pyramid or Ponzi scheme, which is illegal in most countries.
A very reputable Mlm Company which was recently listed in the Inc500 magazine as the 37th fastest growing business in the US is GDI or Global Domains International.
Their product is website hosting which only costs $10.00 a month, and the first seven days are free. There are many members earning a 6 figure residual income plus bonuses with GDI. The very small $10.00 a month investment countered by the huge money making potential of GDI makes it a business that anyone can start and succeed in. Even people in very poor third world countries are making money with GDI.
In other MLM companies, new salespeople may be required to pay for their own training and marketing materials, or to buy a significant amount of inventory. A commonly adopted test of legality is that MLMs follow the so-called 70% rule which prevents members “inventory loading” in order to qualify for additional bonuses. The 70% rule requires participants to sell 70% of previously purchased inventory before procuring new orders. There are however variations in interpretations of this rule.
Some attorneys insist that 70% of purchased inventory should be sold to people who are not participants in the business, while many MLM companies allow for self-
consumption to be a significant part of the sales of a participant. The Federal Trade Commission offers advice for potential Mlm Members to help them identify those which are likely to be pyramid schemes.
Many companies have devised a variety of Mlm Compensation plans over the decades.
Stairstep Breakaway plans are the oldest and most popular. They feature two types of distributors — managers and non-managers — and three types of pay:
Baseshop overrides are overrides (commissions) paid to managers by their subordinate non-managers, collectively called a baseshop. This is the same as any other sales organization.
Generational overrides are overrides of managers from the baseshop of managers who were previously their subordinate. Most plans compensate at least three generations of such managers.
Executive bonuses are commissions for managers who exceed a sales quota. For example, 2% of the total company sales revenue may go to a bonus pool that is shared monthly pro rata to managers who exceed $10,000 in that month.
Unilevel plans offer unlimited width with a set number of levels in depth. Unilevel compensation is paid out based on a set percentage for each level in depth.
Matrix plans limit the width of each level in a distributor’s group, forcing strong distributors to pile (”spillover”) their recruits over people who did not sponsor them.
Binary plans limit the width of each level to two legs. Commissions are based on “cycles,” where a distributor is paid a fixed amount whenever both legs achieve a certain number of sales units each. Commissions are paid incrementally when the sales volume in each leg matches.
Elevator or Matrix schemes feature a board or a list on which each distributor pays in one or more product units to participate. When a certain number of units have been paid in, the structure splits and the earlier participant receives consideration. The Matrix scheme article discusses the legality of this plan.
Differential Pay Scale are compensation plans in which a person’s override is based on the difference in compensation level between them and the person that made the sale or the highest level person between them and the sale. In this model, if someone downline is at an equal or higher compensation level there will be no override since the differential would be 0 or negative. The plus side is that these plans can pay in unlimited depth and people get overrides from any leg in which they maintain a higher pay level than.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a decision, In re. Amway Corp. in 1979, which indicated that multi-level marketing was not illegal per se. However, Amway was found guilty of price fixing (by requiring “independent” distributors to sell at the low price) and making exaggerated income claims.
The FTC advises that multi-level marketing organizations with greater incentives for recruitment than product sales are to be viewed skeptically. In April 2006, it proposed a Business Opportunity Rule intended to require all sellers of business opportunities including MLMs to provide enough information to enable prospective buyers to make an informed decision about their probability of earning money. FTC trade regulation rules usually take 1-1/2 to 3 years before a final rule is established.
Criticisms have been raised against Mlm Programs for being cult-like in nature. Many MLM programs feature intense motivational programs, which can be hard to distinguish from cult propaganda. Criticism of Amway as a cult have been regarded as largely baseless, though some of the “Independent Business Organizations” within Amway have been accused of operating as cults.

New Mlm Companies Are Not Always The Best Promoters. Learn How To Win BIG By Leveraging Their Weakness
New Mlm Companies often go for the new and unsuccessful Internet marketers with their claims of having the “right product”. The new companies appear to offer the makings of a promising Mlm Business opportunity with the distributor’s greatest interest in mind. But let’s face it, the real motive for all the build up is the bottom line - financial return for the New Mlm Company’s founders.
There are literally hundreds of claims among the new companies in the mlm business industry, among them the greatest products, the best compensation plan, and most prominently, the right tools to advance the potential for success.
It’s sad to say, but most distributors find out all too quickly that triumph is harder than they thought it would be, and harder than the companies informed them to believe.
You say, “I’ve got a fantastic idea for a product! So what do I need to do to design the perfect marketing strategies?” This is the ideal question to be asking if you’re serious about success. And the answer is, “YOU DON’T, unless you’re already a skilled marketer.” A jack-of-all-trades is seldom a master of any.
The very best thing new mlm companies could do is contact a master in the direct marketing world. “But this will cost me a fortune!” you might say. Not if you can see the big picture, and recognize that successful marketing is entirely backward to what we are used to.
There is a secret formula to success that isn’t so secret. The formula is simply this:
Find a need, create a answer, and get
targeted customers to notice your product.
The problem is, a lot of people produce a product because it’s just cool, and don’t even recognize that it can be marketed into a necessity. Look At The Cell Phone. Some folks saw the necessity, created the answer, but have no knowledge on how to get it front of the lots of people. Here’s where the genuine professional marketer will make new mlm companies shine.
* That promotes the distributor! * That teaches your distributors how to be successful! * That has all the tools required to succeed in any mlm company.
This marketing system dismisses the need for the new mlm companies to promote the “needs or solutions” of their products. It also stops the arguments of whose product is the greatest, because there is no need to. The distributors will advertise their success system, recommend all the training needed to succeed in the Mlm Industry, and promote the new mlm company’s product as a retail product or primary opportunity as a back-end sale.
And there it is, a win-win combination for the new mlm companies, and their partners!
Is there in fact the possibility of creating sufficient earnings online to gain the financial freedom, but most importantly the time freedom, we all beg and dream for? Unquestionable there is! But not using the tools or the action plans being taught by 99% of the new mlm companies, or any other online mlm company.
This is not to express that the companies are misleading their distributors. The fact is, they just don’t know. From a corporate standpoint, founders develop their business models to monetize their profits, and then have somebody come and create an action plan for the distributors to abide by. This is one of the reasons the failure rate in the mlm industry is at 95%.
There is a way for new companies in the mlm industry to pull off great success and keep the distributors best interest their priority, but the majority companies are blind to real marketing, and the psychology involved in receiving maximum conversions from their leads.
So store in mind when you’re looking for new mlm companies, no matter how good the products or services are you need to evaluate the opportunity they are offering from an professional marketer’s perspective.

In the Mlm Industry, their’s a single moment that a company develops a revolutionary product or way of doing business. Within this industry, Agel is in the fore front of suspension gel technology. The company has positioned themselves to become the 1st technology-driven company in the multi-level-marketing industry. Agel is not a mlm scam. It is a legitimate global company currently working in 50 countries. In this Agel direct sales review, we’ll reveal the leadership, the products and how one can create residual income on this Mlm Opportunity
Who are Agel’s Leaders?
Glen Jensen (Agel Founder and CEO) is an 18 year multi-level-marketing veteran. Started out as a customer sales rep while in college, he worked his way up the corporate ladder to give him the business knowledge he has today. He founded Agel in Provo Utah on March 2005 Craig Bradley (Co-Founder/VP of Team Member Relations) is a long time friend of Glen’s and is a 19 year direct sales veteran. Having worked with over 30 Network Marketing Companies in his business career, Craig is a well placed asset for Agel.
What on Earth is Suspension Gel Technology?
A plant-based, gelatinous fluid that allows basic nutrients to “float.” When nutrients “float,” they stay dissolved and “suspended”. This makes Agels products easier to eat or drink, you get the same amount of nutrients whether you rip open a gel pack or sip from a straw. Also due to the gel technology, the nutrients are readily absorbed by your body so you can acquire instantaneous results.
Agel’s Gel Supplements consist of:
OHM - increased mental energy FIT - supports healthy reduction in body weight PRO - protein punch in a single-serve package EXO - lose free radicals and gain better health MIN - the right amount of vitamins and minerals UMI - improve your immune system FLX - 4 supplements for healthy joints HRT - Fuel to protect your heart CAL - get the calcium you need for healthy bones
Agel sells the following skin nutrition products
GLO - gel packet that hydrates your body also enhances the collagen fibers Gentle Daily Cleansing Gel - eliminate impurities Refreshing Misting Gel - tone and balance your skin Revitalizing Gel Scrub - exfoliate and purify your skin Intensive Gel Serum - gives your skin a healthy glow Age-defying Eye Gel - brightens & soothes
How Can I Generate Income In Agel?
You have a preference to launch with Agel by investing in a Personal Pack (Cost: $250) or an Executive Kit (Cost: $1000). The business center (aka: Quadra-Plan) has two legs. As dollars invested on enrollment, autoship and sales are generated by you and your team, these dollars are converted to “Commissionable Volume” or CV. 10% of CV is paid to the team’s lesser leg in team volume commission checks. As your team increases, the more your CV grows. There’s no cap to how large your Quadra-Plan can strengthen, so regardless how good or poor your lesser leg performs, you’ll continue to earn 10%. Now if you really want to form a large business, sign up for the Executive Kit. Why should you? This entitles you to three Quadra-Plans with 2 legs each and earning ten percent on the lesser legs of all 3 centers. This was just a brief description on the long term income potential with Agel, you can also earn Executive bonus, expenses paid on annual leadership retreats, expense accounts, luxury car bonuses and leveraged matching bonuses.
Agel has had massive development in all the countries they conduct business in. However just because Agel is successful doesn’t mean that success will trickle down to you. If you’ve never owned a business before or lack any sales and marketing experience, I plead with you to invest in yourself by learning how to promote yourself correctly. Set a goal for yourself to work your Network Marketing Business for no less than a year. Have a dear friend hold you responsible for generating some task on your business on a daily, weekly & monthly basis. If you believe without a shadow of a doubt of your success, then that is what you’ll achieve.
About the Author
In order to master the strategies the top producers in this industry use you must network with other networkers that are of the same mindset as yourself. This Agel Review was written to provide value for other networkers searching for a new company but also to shed light on the lack of specific marketing education many Mlm Companies don’t offer. Learn the specific tips and strategies that allow top performers to have constant cash flow, generate leads using free or paid strategies and build your Agel business on autopilot.

If you’ve ever dreamed of running your own business from home, whether on a full or part-time basis…and are good with people but have very little business knowledge, then Multilevel Marketing (MLM) may be for you. This is especially true if you have a minimal amount of start-up cash.
Mlm Companies provide a product or service to the consumer via a network of “independent” distributors, who usually work from their home.
Reputable MLM companies also provide a low start-up cost, all the training you need, advertising in one form or another, and supply you with a product line-up or service to sell. They also allow you to recruit other distributors and make commissions on their total sales.
The United States Federal Trade Commission, however, cautions anyone from joining a Mlm Company that pays you for each distributor you recruit, as opposed to only paying a commission on the total sales they generate. This is called ‘Pyramiding’ and is illegal.
The U.S. FTC also encourages you to thoroughly research a MLM company before signing on the dotted line, and not to sign anything under pressure, but instead, take time to consider all the details. You can check out their Multilevel Marketing Caution Web Page at: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/pyrdalrt.htm. On this page, they also list seven checks you should do before making your decision whether to join or not.
Research is always an important component of any business venture and considering a distributorship with a MLM company is no exception.
Searching the Internet under “Multilevel Marketing” returns a recipe of results. These range from government agencies, general information web sites, encyclopedia type sites to a host of disgruntled, former Mlm Distributors. People who are “pro” MLM don’t write web sites on the topic because they’re usually too busy building their network.
THE GOOD SIDE
Here are some of the benefits of finding a reputable MLM company:
- They have an established and very marketable product line or service, and strive to improve or add to the existing line-up. - Recruiting new distributors will be a streamlined process, and the company will not be involved in Pyramiding. - As a company, they will have a solid track record and good work ethics. - No experience will be required. A good MLM company will provide one-on-one training, as well as motivational seminars and a full compliment of training materials. After all, in Multilevel marketing, when one succeeds all succeed. - A reputable MLM company will be “Family” rated, meaning that crude conduct is not tolerated. - They will provide an excellent bonus plan with many incentives for those who excel. - Well-established MLM companies should be able to provide you with resource material to aid you in not only product sales but in recruiting. - They will have minimal start-up fees. - A strong support system. - You will be led by example. - Healthy team competition. - There will be a successful business and marketing plan in place that can be successfully duplicated by others, assuming they apply themselves to the plan and are motivated to succeed. - There exists the possibility of full-time or part-time commitment.
These attributes would definitely belong to an ideal Multilevel Marketing Company, however not all reputable companies excel in all these areas. Some companies will be better in certain areas than others. Do research on the company. Don’t just accept the motivational hype used by most MLM companies in order to recruit.
Some MLM distributors are so highly trained that they have a “come-back” for almost every statement you make or concern you have. This would be considered a ‘high-pressure’ invitation to join. Always take time away to cool off - especially if you’re excited by what you heard. Sit on your decision for a while and do research. If the company is good, they will still be there when you wake up tomorrow; and yes, you will get a follow-up phone call.
THE DOWNSIDE
While the Mlm Model can be a great tool to achieve what you want in life, it would be remiss not to mention the downside.
- It is easy to get ‘taken’ by a disreputable MLM company. Do your research. - If you plan on developing a network - a “downline” - it will cost you more money than you realize and take you longer than you think - although this is slight compared to the cost and time required to start up a traditional business. You will spend a lot on resource and training materials that you will end up giving away to prospects and to your downline distributors. - You might spend a lot of money on fuel for your vehicle, meals out, hotel rooms or neck surgery from sleeping in your car. - Some companies insist on a minimum monthly order to maintain your distributorship. - Some companies only pay you for recruiting other distributors and not on their total sales volume. Beware, as this is called ‘Pyramiding’ and is illegal in most countries. - While you may initially be led to believe that the products sell themselves and that you can make a lot of money with little effort, beware. Most businesses, whether they are traditional, online, or MLM, take a lot of energy and effort to make them successful. Consider a rocket: 60 - 80% of the fuel is used just to raise it a few inches off the ground. - Be ready for a lot of rejection. Approximately 80%+ of the people you contact will turn you down. - It is easy to get caught up in the ‘dream’ and overspend because, “Winners always find a way.” It is also easy to be pressured into ‘willingly’ spending beyond your means. - It could very easily become your life’s vocation, with everything centered on it. Some distributors even refuse to attend family weddings etc., because it falls on the same date as their MLM seminar. - Also, like most businesses, when you begin you will be spending much more than you make.
The final judgment: Most business entrepreneurs face the question, “How much am I able and willing to lose if it doesn’t work?” That is the question you have to ask yourself before you get into Multilevel Marketing. Another question you need to ask yourself, how motivated am I? One thing you will need to do continuously is recruit. Many of your downline will drop out, its like a bucket of sand with a hole in the bottom. You have to constantly keep filling it with more sand (recruits) or you end up with an empty bucket. There are ways to do this fairly automated but that is a topic for another article…basically either buying or acquiring quality leads.
And of course, what do you want from life and what are you willing to do to get it?
If you enjoy helping others succeed so that you can succeed, are willing to take the risks associated with being in business for yourself, even on a part-time basis, and are willing to put in long days, then Multilevel Marketing may just be the tool you are looking for to achieve your business and life goals.

The introduction of the Internet in the 1990s introduced a whole new way to do business. For many people, it opened the door to a bright, new future. For many others, it opened the door for scams and spam.
Legitimate business opportunities have been in high demand for years. Multi-level Marketing (MLM) and Network Marketing Businesses and campaigns have sprung to life. It is now easier than ever to fill out a simple form and receive information via e-mail.
Businesses quickly found ways to promote themselves online to generate more visibility for their products or services. One of the most effective tools for building a business is a simple form that captures the name and e-mail address of the person requesting information. Lead generation and business leads have become very simple for most entrepreneurs.
There are many ways to build your list of business leads. Landing pages, buying leads, mailing lists, newsletters, banners and links are only a few ideas. Some methods are much more effective than others. For example, a landing page or e-mail sign-up form effortlessly generates leads for you.
The creation of banners is very effective because attractive, informative banners receive clicks. As more people use your banner and link to your website, your page rank gradually increases.
What makes lead-generating landing pages effective is the fact that people voluntarily enter their information for you. People simply visit your website, read your valuable information and submit their contact information if they are interested.
This almost guarantees that you do not get reported for spam e-mails. When someone gives you their contact information, you are free to send them information from your website or about your business. Just be sure to include a way for them to remove themselves from your
mailing list.
Creating mailing lists is a good way to generate business leads. Mailing lists can be created from your landing page and referrals. Some very good mailing lists can be purchased as well.
If you do decide to purchase a mailing list, be sure it comes from a reliable, respectable source. If you do not do your due diligence and purchase a mailing list from a respectable source, you may find yourself reported for spam more than a few times.
Blogs, videos and article marketing are great ways to generate business leads. Simply blogging about what you do and your personal successes helps draw people in. Don’t post pictures of your big profits; pictures can be manipulated.
Blog sites are generally free and a very good way to promote your business. Write about the facts of building your online business. Do not try to mislead people and convince them that it’s easy to make thousands of dollars a day. That isn’t realistic. The best way to build your business is honesty and integrity.
Article marketing is a very valuable business tool. If you don’t consider yourself a writer, hire someone to write for you. Many article marketing companies hire a staff of writers to write for clients.
These companies charge a set amount per article, but a reputable company is well worth the investment. Your articles will be professionally written, edited and e-mailed to you for approval before being submitted to a variety of submission sites.
Buying business leads isn’t the way to go, for several reasons. This option could be effective short term or as an initial small jump start for your business. Buying leads isn’t a good or smart long-term business model.
When you make your proposal to lead providers, prepare yourself for mass rejection. With all of the business opportunities available on the Internet today, it’s very likely that your business model is also being used by others.
The one company you buy your business leads from will likely sell the same leads to several other entrepreneurs looking to build their businesses. By the time your leads read through all of their other business offers, they’re fed up and don’t even take the opportunities seriously.
Building your online business takes perseverance, determination and a large dose of common sense. Buying your leads from some random company doesn’t demonstrate very much common sense.
In order to build a successful online empire, you must work intelligently. Potential entrepreneurs do not read spam mailings with any amount of serious intentions. They may look at your website, but if they find four others like it, count them out.
Who wants to build a business that is identical to that of hundreds of others? Even Network Marketing businesses need that special type of individuality that comes from smart entrepreneurs.
If you are still insistent that you must buy business leads, be smart about it. When you contact a company to purchase business leads, ask lots of questions. Any legitimate company can give you answers and references.
Hundreds of companies promise to provide legitimate business leads. Hundreds of companies also do this at the cost of their reputation. Locating a legitimate company to buy business leads from takes a lot of research and dedication on your part.

Can Donald Trump’s endorsement of ACN on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ legitimize a Multi-level Marketing company?
Trump has been associated with ACN in the past and recently used ACN as part of a competition on his show, ‘Celebrity Apprentice’. ACN is a multi-level marketing (MLM) company, which many people believe are scams. Does Trump’s name help make ACN seem legit?
I don’t know much about ACN.. nor am I associated with ACN.
Multi-level marketing does not need Donald Trump to “legitimize” MLM. It is already legitimate as thousands of self-made millionaires can atest. People often cite that the success comes at a cost of hundreds of thousands of people who do not make it. But what is life, whereby those few that are inspired lead those that are not?
What’s more is the training that MLM provides to people in educating people from the job mentality to the entrepreneurial one. There are many people who do not “make it” in MLM yet they will easily point back to their experience in MLM that made the difference in their overall business success.
Am I an independent rep of ACN? Yes. Do I have other business ventures? Yes. Could I go on? Yes. But go on and throw your verbal sticks and stones at MLM. It offers a viable opportunity to so many like America itself. I stand firm.

Why We Want you to be Rich ! By Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump.
How hard would it be to find a job making decent money with a double bachelors in Management Information Systems and Business management from a highly ranked business school and also with CCNA certification. I have no experience in the technology field outside of school.
I’m not sure if you’re talking about being a Network Admin, but all I can tell you is it’s a highly competitive field.
My brother and his 3 friends are all 23 and each make about $90k+ a year. My brother went to school just for the sake of of having the Bachelors degree (and in many cases, knew more than the teachers), and the two other friends did not go to school yet they are all making the same amount of money. All 3 were “hackers” in grade school and high school (the FBI actually came to my house and his friends’ homes just like in that movie “Hackers”- it’s a long story), and they now all work for companies doing various computer and networking duties, especially when it comes to network security.
I hate to break it to you but in the technology field there is heavy emphasis on talent and experience rather than the name of the school or the type of degree one has. I have friends who are in their 20s and 30s who went to school and got Bachelors degrees in the computer & technology field, and many of them have had a hard time finding a decent job. Add to this the fact that there is now a lot of company outsourcing going to India where there are a lot of people who have or are now studying computer-based jobs. I knew a couple of people who were getting paid very well in the several years ago, then lost their jobs to people in India who are getting paid a fraction for these positions.
You’re going to need experience first before you land a decent job. No company is going to let someone who doesn’t have experience handle equipment that contains important documents, emails, etc. You might have to start out at a very small company in order to gain experience first, but the pay will probably be low if you have no experience. It sucks, but we all have to put in our dues first before we get the good paying jobs.

Outsourcing became a fashionable term in the beginning of the 90s. Many companies, having decided to focus on their core competencies to excel at the market place, chose to outsource noncore activities like Information Technology (IT). Recently, faced with daunting challenges and unhealthy alliances, most companies have been rethinking their IT outsourcing strategy. This report looks at the benefits and risks in IT outsourcing, and how to mitigate these risks. The report also focuses on India - the world’s favorite IT outsourcing destination - the opportunities offered by this country and the challenges faced by companies in India. IT Outsourcing is defined as a decision taken by an organization to contract-out or sell some or all of the organization’s IT assets, people and/or activities to a third party vendor, who in turn provides and manages the services for a certain time period and monetary fee.
In the recent years the term IT outsourcing is being increasingly used to include any IT activity that is not performed in-house by the company. These includes specific IT Projects, IT call center and service outsourcing etc. For the scope of this report, the latest definition will also be used as a basis for discussion. IT outsourcing industry is expected to grow at an annual rate of 16% to US$ 120 billion. The estimated global market share of the IT outsourcing industry in 1998 was US$ 99 billion. From a relatively unusual entrepreneurial activity, IT outsourcing has recently exploded across the global corporate landscape. Companies outsource IT for many reasons, ranging from its high profile and current popularity to cost pressures from competition and economic recession. Management often regard IT as a non-core activity and believes that IT service vendors have the necessary economics of scale and expertise to handle and provide better and more efficient IT services than their own in house IT department. Some companies are compelled to outsource their IT activity because IT is an enabler in a company and not a revenue producing activity, and managers would rather outsource non-revenue producing activity to a third party who is better skilled in handling such an operation. This perception of IT as a cost burden encourages companies to outsource this activity. Most of the IT operations are regarded as a commodity that does not differentiate the company from its competitors. When an IT operation does not provide a strategic advantage, companies prefer to outsource it to a third party or an outsourcing vendor, who generally claim that they can provide this service for less than what it costs the company’s IT department. In the IT sector, technology is changing at a tremendous pace and organizations cannot keep up with these changing standards and newer technologies. It is at these unpredictable times organizations look at IT vendors to gain access to the best technologies in a cost-effective way.

The birth of Indian IT Market
One of every four global giants outsource their software requirements to India. The IT outsourcing model was born in India. The Indian IT industry, being the first, introduced to Software Organizations, worldwide, the new and highly cost-effective mode of outsourcing. The large technical resource pool in India was the main reason for the proliferation of the outsourcing services. The cost of skilled manpower in India was lower than what other Technical giants offered. The fluency and versatility with English also proved fortifying for the emerging Indian IT region.
In the early 1990s, the Indian economy underwent a major change in terms globalization and privatization. The Telecom Industry was released from the monopoly of public sector. It changed the face of the Indian Telecom Sector with latest facilities, fast connectivity to the world and other advanced telecom technologies. The world started to see India as a strong IT and BPO service provider. Outsourcing that had started in the 1980s gained a momentum with the boost in the Telecom arena. Major IT leaders emerged in the Indian high tech cities to offer the most competitive brainpower, solutions and services with major time/cost benefits and global connectivity. The skill sets of the Indian technical professionals broadened. The wave of software education in universities and schools significantly added to the number of skilled resources produced, each year.
With India emerging as leaders in evolving cost-effective IT solutions, the quality focus was never lost. Soon Indian software providers started maintaining high quality and performance standards. Indian IT Industry proved its commitment and consciousness to provide world-class quality standards. The investment in ERP initiatives increased substantially. India soon became the ground for providing total solutions for Global clients to outsource turnkey projects. The IT skills extend expertise in a wide spectrum of services like sustenance engineering services, business process re-engineering, maintenance of legacy systems, system migration, embedded systems and e-commerce applications.
The Indian IT domain strengthened with the ability to provide world-class workplace, 24X7 connectivity, high-speed Internet connectivity and the best security and networking. Thus, evolved the concept of dedicated development centers wherein virtual extensions of the clients’ business was established as different units in development centers in India. The clients’ development environment is replicated in the unit setup in India. An onsite team transfers knowledge to the team of offshore professionals for absolute clarity on clients’ business objectives.
Risks in IT Outsourcing:
There is a saying that goes around in the IT industry: ‘Every company gets the outsourcing partner it deserves’. There is a great element of truth in this saying. Companies that have inefficiently managed their IT department almost always find incompetent outsourcing partners. Whereas, organizations that outsource efficiently managed IT functions derive substantial and further benefits from outsourcing. Companies that have not done their homework prior to the outsourcing decision and companies that have viewed IT as a burden that has to be offloaded as soon as possible have realized that they are in a much worse quandary than ever before. Some of the other risks of IT outsourcing or causes for concern while considering to outsource are mentioned here:
þ Test the Market : Some companies do not undertake market testing and some do not even consider ‘in sourcing’, where the company may be better of sourcing the activity to themselves, especially in the case of strategic IT functions.
þ Managing the Outsourcing Vendors :Most companies do not realize that in order to manage the outsourcing activity they need to have good management expertise in the company to begin with. Companies that have faced challenges in managing their own IT department may find it more difficult to handle the outsourcing vendor. Outsourcing the IT function does not naturally take away the scope of management, in fact it demands more efficient and more organized management, which results in better control of the off-site vendor.
þ Quality of Outsourcing Vendor : While many companies outsource their IT activity because they are incapable of finding and retaining programming staff, companies, much to their consternation, have realized that IT outsourcing vendors also face these same obstacles and challenges. There have been many instances where companies have discovered that IT vendors even bid for specialized projects for which they have no in-house expertise in the hope that they can find these specialists once the contract is secured. Companies that plan to outsource their IT activity may have to do in depth research on the bidders and their reputation and in-house talent.
þ Cost of Outsourcing : The biggest and the most frequent mishaps happen when companies focus on costs as their single most important driver for IT outsourcing. Most CEOs look at the balance sheet and see IT as one of the biggest consumers of company funds. This is because most of the cost benefits of IT are not transparent. While IT may help other departments to reduce costs, IT as itself may be seen as a department that has increasing costs year after year. Some companies have even gone to the extent of admitting that the so called esoteric benefits derived by IT are not substantiated. In such instances the companies readily outsource IT and see a change in their income statement that is immediate and in some cases even tremendous. But many companies are inadvertently signing away the investment in time and training incurred in developing an IT department. It is likely that the companies have sacrificed their crucial competencies and capabilities that may be extremely hard to regain when the company changes its focus in the future.
þ Adaptability of rapid IT development : One of the factors that motivate companies to outsource their IT activity is the belief that they cannot hope to adapt to the rapid changes and new developments in the market place. The companies believe that the vendors will have the agility, ability and the economics of scale to respond to the latest trends and development
þ Contract Lifecycle : The biggest dilemma companies face while deciding to outsource IT is the length of the contract. Some companies prefer short-term contract and some believe that long-term contract ensures long-term commitment from the vendor. Vendors typically do not prefer short-term contracts, but companies sometimes prefer such contracts as the field of IT is full of uncertainties and companies do not want to be stuck with a vendor who skills are no longer competitive in the market place. A long term contract normally ensures more investment in time and money by the vendors and also gives the vendors incentive to update their skills.
þ Dependability : When the decision to outsource occurs, companies essentially stop learning about newer technologies, and all the advantages gained by investment made in technology development and adaptation is sometimes wasted. In the long run, the company also finds that there is a lack of informed buyers in the Company as to tomorrow’s technologies. IT outsourcing sometimes does create a dent on the organization’s natural learning process.
þ unrealistic expectations : Some companies even regard outsourcing as a necessary evil as they have observed that IT outsourcing affects the innovative capacity of the organization. Companies have often been disappointed when they expected the vendors to be innovative, while still asking them to focus on providing the lowest cost alternative. This leads to unrealistic expectations. Innovation, to a large extent, requires flexibility, resources and certain competency levels that can sometimes be fostered only in-house. While there are tremendous risks associated with outsourcing, the benefits derived from outsourcing the right way are manifold. The growth of IT outsourcing is increasingly based on ‘selective sourcing’, characterized by short-term contracts for specific activities.
India – the leading destination for outsourcing IT services
The size of the IT outsourcing market in India increased from $2.9bn in 2002 to $12.5bn in 2007, reflecting a CAGR(Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 33.9%, and is further predicted to grow to $40.9bn by 2012, at a CAGR of 21.2%.
Key market features include:
þ Transaction intensive business process outsourcing (BPO) services account for nearly 78% of the revenue mix, and knowledge driven process outsourcing (KPO) garners the remaining 22% market share. Industry experts estimate that after 2012 revenue contributed by these segments will change substantially, with the BPOs contributing nearly two thirds of total turnover, followed by the KPOs with the remaining one third share.
þ Revenue mix is essentially driven by exports to the US and Europe. Presently, exports account for nearly 85% of the total IT market in India – a trend that is also predicted to continue in future India currently accounts for a near 45.0% share of the global IT outsourcing market.
þ According to key players this is predicted to grow to nearly 55.0% by 2012 – largely due to the accelerated growth of KPO, as well as in the growth of BPO services. In addition, outsourcing is set to increase from continental Europe and the Middle East, on top of the traditional markets i.e. the US and the UK.
India Vs China - The IT Outsourcing War
“One of every four global giants outsource their software requirements to India”
McKinsey studies, infogain
In the past, there have been several speculations about China capturing the major share of Indian IT outsourcing market. But as leading market researchers probe further into the changing economies of both China and India, the studies reveals positive results for the Indian Software Industry. China has several critical problem areas to counter before it becomes a threat to the Indian IT supremacy. Even though the revenue from IT sector for China has increased, it still lags behind the Indian IT revenue. In fact, according to the reports, it is still half of India’s share, which is $12.7 billion a year. The main reason that outsourcers in U.S. rely on Indian software providers is the maturity and stability of its outsourcing market and advanced telecom infrastructure. China also faces a shortage of technical English-speaking resources. Countries like Philippines, Singapore, Russia and Ukraine, recently surfaced to provide outsourcing alternatives but the political instability is a major drawback for them.
In the last decade India dominated the IT outsourcing domain. Meanwhile, China geared up aggressively to brace up its software-outsourcing Industry. The booming economy and low wages in China emerged as the strengths that could threaten the Indian IT market.
But as per reports and surveys of leading market researchers, it will take several years for China to match the quality and expertise of Indian IT services domain. The Chinese IT industry is fragmented and needs to consolidate to attract major players, worldwide. “For starters, the Chinese must consolidate their highly fragmented industry to gain the size and expertise needed to capture large international projects. Currently, there is little movement in this direction,” says a McKinsey report.
India still continues to evolve as the leading player in IT arena. The factors that have led to the accelerated growth are the support from Indian Government to open policies, excellent IT education system, English speaking, flexible regulations, investor friendly reforms, knowledgeable talent pool of IT professionals and managers.
The future of outsourcing : India is the world ’s favorite outsourcing destination
Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) is the biggest revenue grosser in India as KPO companies move up the value chain in their service offerings which includes:
1. Research and Development
þ Product Innovation - Companies are going beyond basic research to invest in innovation and new product development. Companies that have invested in R&D in India are Cisco Systems, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard, Google General Motors Corp. and Boeing Co among others.
þ Co-development- In pharmaceuticals, India has the opportunity of co-development and ownership of new patented drugs through drug research, clinical trials and manufacturing. Indian pharma major Ranbaxy has an agreement with MNC GlaxoSmithKline to commercialize compounds they develop together.
2. Legal Outsourcing :
India ’s large pool of qualified English-speaking lawyers with experience in the British legal system can offer paralegal support, legal support and patent services. A few Indian companies affiliated with American law firms are now able capture a tiny piece of the American market. They are now doing legal research at very high rates by Indian standards but yet 50% below typical American rates.
3. Engineering Outsourcing :
India can provide high-quality engineering services in the fields of:
India can offer management services for IT infrastructure, applications operations, IT security and maintenance. This sector presents great potential through large-value multi-year contracts
5. Accounting Services :
We are in the initial stage where payroll processing and some accounting is being done for large American companies. This trend will continue and soon a full range of accounting and tax services will be provided by Indian companies.
6. Outsourcing opportunities for India exist in other fields like Financial Research, content development, medical writing: animation, film, publishing, web services; Human Resource outsourcing: recruitment, training, Education, Nanotechnology and many others.

What are the legal issues to consider for businesses or non-profits using social networking sites?
I work for a non-profit organization that has, in spurts, started using social networking sites such as facebok and myspace to connect to current clients, as well as a marketing tool to gain interest. What are the legal issues to be considered with these? How can businesses and organizations stay safe legally while using these sites?
You can start a social networking site under your business or personal name. As long as you don’t create any paid membership or don’t even use an advertising company like google adsense for profit you don’t have to worry about anything. If you start google adsense and you start generating some revenue than your company will have to file taxes for that.
I just started my site last month it is also under my business name.
