I decided to investigate an opportunity called Ambit Energy due to the number of scams running online, this is what I found out.
AE is a retail energy provider based in the United States, it follows an MLM or Multi-level Marketing approach in providing for its customers.
The Company Origin
Ambit Energy was founded in 2006, as an energy provider in America. The independent consultants and employees are considered to be the main movers of the company. Jere Thompson functions as CEO and placed the offices in the West End district of Dallas, Texas.
The Product
Ambit Energy offers its main product, energy. Since energy demand is rising all over the country, the company is claiming to give people the right amounts they need without spending more.
In New York, this company caters to the National Grid and ConEd territories in New York and Long Island. In Illinois, AE caters to residential natural gas consumers. Texas serves as the model for deregulation, since residential clients spend more than $24 billion each year. It functions to help cut these costs significantly.
Selling the Product
The independent consultants work via a one-to-one network. They tell their family, friends and other contacts about the opportunities that the retail energy company offers and earn commissions and income. Deregulation should be emphasized when representing the product of energy. This company is a pending member of the DSA or Direct Selling Association. The DSA Code of Ethics is followed throughout procedures.
This company seems to have a legit opportunity.
However, the MAJOR PROBLEM I see is the marketing plan. This company teaches its reps to prospect family & friends, do home parties, buy leads and distribute brochures.. I don’t believe this to be a solid marketing plan.
With the Internet, business can be leveraged to reach millions across the globe.

Internet marketing is an advantage for those companies that use it. Unlike other traditional methods of marketing, companies do not need to use a large amount of energy or time in Internet marketing. National and international markets can be reached by using only a handful of resources. Due to very low investment, online marketing is being used by small businesses. For the purpose of this, websites and blogs have been developed. Customers can receive newsletters, and if by chance those newsletters do not contain the information that they require, they can simply search for their required information online. They can then proceed to make a decision and purchase the product or service online.
However, there are factors that hinder the growth of online marketing, and that is the delayed loading of the page. The consumers’ patience will certainly be tested when downloading web pages. In addition to this, the speed will be reduced even more if the business design complex web pages include many graphics and animations. Another negative point to online marketing is that customers cannot feel, taste, smell or try products before making a decision to purchase them. This is the reason why many online stores have created liberal return policies, whereby customer satisfaction is guaranteed.
Identity theft is also another great threat of online shopping. When paying online using credit cards or e-checks, you are susceptible to hackers and information can be stolen and used. There have been many hackers and websites caught who were involved in buying and selling personal information. There are however, many websites that have taken great measures to incorporate good security on their websites. Encryption is one of the best methods. There is the possibility of a hacker intercepting data when it is being transferred between two computers. Therefore, the data is altered by applying an encryption algorithm as it is being sent through the network and when it is being received. It is then that a decryption algorithm is applied in order to bring the data back to its original form.
Many businesses are being influenced by online selling such as banking, advertising, music etc. Rather than taking a trip to the store to purchase cassettes and CDs, music can be purchased online. Bank transactions such as depositing, withdrawing, transferring funds and paying bills can all be performed online. There are billions of dollars invested each year solely for online advertising.
What is MLM anyway? It’s Multi-level Marketing. I prefer to refer to the industry as “Network Marketing”, as the term MLM seems to have a negative stigma attached to it for some people. Don’t worry; though they have similarities, Mlm Opportunity work is not the same as pyramid schemes. No one is being defrauded in the Mlm Or Network Marketing Industry.
When you start a Mlm Business for yourself, you basically become an independent consultant or distributor for a product or family of products that have true value for the purchaser. These products can range from cosmetics to herbal supplements to distinctive cookware and gadgetry for the kitchen.
One of the benefits of starting your own MLM business, other than the whole being your own boss angle, is a low start-up cost. This type of home business can be started for as little as a few hundred dollars, usually used to purchase a sample kit of the products your business will be offering to market.
When selecting the Best Mlm Company to work with, I suggest you make sure the business you are considering meets all seven of the following criteria:
1) Unique Products:
Products must serve multiple different market categories, and must be unique enough to get patents, and they have to serve the masses.
2) Company Stability:
The ability to give you long-term business and financial security, based on theircompany and business history.
3) Marketing System:
The system used to market the business to others must be simple and duplicatable. This will ensure your business team will continue to grow strong and deep long after you cease your recruiting efforts!
4) Company Management:
Must be led by already successful leaders in business with a vision for future growth.
5) Global Reach:
Must be ground floor in their global expansion. This way you could potentially benefit from the companies plans for continued growth worldwide.
6) Compensation & Incentives:
Must maximize your income based on your efforts. Must payout at least 50% of Sales, must offer unlimited depth within compensation plan, Fast Start Bonuses, and other Rewards and Recognition, you must be able to achieve $10,000/month true residual with less than 500 people in your organization.
7) Pay-It-Forward:
Does the company Pay-It Forward to the Masses. They must give back globally what they are taking out. The company’s vision must be to make an impact on the world in a positive way.
Once you’ve decided which company looks most attractive to you using the seven criteria listed above, learn all you can about that company so that you feel comfortable in your new home-based business endeavor. You’ll also then be able to answer any questions that come from potential customers and/or business partners. You don’t want to be faced with a question you can’t answer, as it would not reflect well on you as an independent product distributor or the company whose products you are selling.
After you’ve made the decision, done your due diligence, and actually made the capital outlay for a sample business kit, it’s time to hit the road to showcase the products and generate the first sales in your new home-based MLM business.

I’ve had the most success with viralurl and forum marketing. At the moment I’m setting up a MySpace campaign.
With viralurl you can send out emails to 3000 people. You do need some decent copywriting skills to get people to open your mail and click your link though.
With forum marketing you can target your market spot on. It is important not to start promoting your business though. Write a catchy, inspiring signature to get clicks and post helpful comments. Knowledge is king in forum marketing.

Multi-level Marketing (MLM) is a business model that combines direct marketing with franchising.
Multi-level Marketing Businesses function by recruiting salespeople (also called Distributors, Independent Business Owners, IBOs, Franchise Owners, Sales Consultants, Beauty Consultants, Consultants, etc.) to sell a product and offer additional sales commissions based on the sales of people recruited into their downline, an organization of people that includes direct recruits, recruits’ recruits, etc. This arrangement is similar to franchise arrangements where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchisor as well as to an area or region manager, but in some Mlm Programs, there can be seven or more levels of people receiving royalties from one person’s sales.
I generally don’t like multi-level marketing, but it certainly can work for some people.
As noted, one huge issue is that for “bottom-line” people, your commissions are essentially split with 3 to 7 other people (your “uplines”). In addition, most Mlm Companies sell products at premium prices, and provide narrow margins of 20% to 40% to their consultants; the same kind of product may offer a 50% to 80% margin for regular retailers.
