“If it works, it works” as the old saying goes. That is, unless of course, it does’nt. Network Marketing & Mlm Opportunities look good on paper. We’ve all seen the presentations, wether via an online video presentation or at our kitchen table. We hear impressive terminology like “forced matrix”, “hybrid networking model” and “direct response networking” to get us salivating over potential for a quick net profit, and a long-term residual income. A distributor gets involved, spends time and money hoping to beat the staggering odds stacked against them. And, as with 99% of all network or multi-level marketer, the distributor fails. They lose money, motivation and inevitably drop out of the program.
This begs the question; “Why do people, knowing full well that statistically they will indeed fail, even get involved in the first place?” They bought into the myth, or illusion of Mlm Success.
Do we suggest that MLM and Network Marketing Business models are a scam? Of course not. There are in fact legitimate opportunities out there that offer new and unique products or services to the market. After all, on paper, the math works out. However, in reality, the vast majority will fail within the first three months, regardless of the product or market appetite.

Myth #1: MLM offers a better business opportunity than any other conventional model for amassing a large fortune.
Reality: 99% everyone who invests in MLM ends up losing money. That means that fewer than 1% of all MLM representatives ever earn a profit. With aproximately 13.3 MLM and Network Marketing Distributors in the US alone, only 130,000 ever make money. And those “gurus” earning a sustainable income at this business are an even smaller percentage still. The fact is that mathematics inevitably limit every Mlm Opportunity. The Mlm Business Model itself allows for only a small number of successful distributors. Continuous growth of an Mlm Company is in fact usually due to the constant number of new enrollees, most of which drop out by the third month. It takes an army of failures to create just one successful distributor.
Myth #2: MLM is easy. Recruiting Friends and relatives ensures you have Life-Time distributors & customers.
Reality: Capitalizing upon personal relationships like friends and family members to build your organization can hinder and even destroy social standing. Simply put, people don’t like being pressured by friends or relatives to buy products or join a business. Naturally, people tend to avoid them and identify them as a salesman, not a friend. In MLM, because everyone with a heart beat is a prospect, every waking moment is a potential time for marketing and recruiting. Talent, dedication and salesmanship all require one key element to hone and enhance: time. This is one of the reasons why so many MLM ‘ers jump from program to program, hoping to catch the next wave. They have spent so much time on the phone and keeping up with changing company guidelines that it has actually become their life.
Myth #4: MLM & network marketing are the best option for owning your own business and achieving financial independence.
Reality: Distributorship in MLM is not “owning a business”. Most MLM contracts have termination of the distributorship clauses in their Terms & Conditions Agreement. This makes it easy, and perfectly legal, to cancel your distributorship at will, commissions can be withheld and down lines can be taken away arbitrarily. Mlm Distributors are not “business owners”, but joiners in a rigid duplication system over which they have virtually no control and must adhere to.
Myth #5: Network marketing & MLM’s are the most effective after building a large down line, thus leading to long-term residual income.
Reality: Most assume that success with MLM depends on reselling the opportunity to sign up more distributors and building a massive organization. As a matter of fact, long term residual income lies in a loyal customer base, NOT from the organizations efforts. Translation: in the long term, money can be made from the customers using your product, not from that 99% failure rate we discussed earlier. Personal retailing is where the potential for long term income, not building huge down lines destined to collapse. So of course, the question arises, why even put any more money or effort into recruiting distributors, when the real money is on the retail side?

The Sponsoring Formula That Always Gets Mlm Signups
This might sound like an illusion. Or, you might think it’s impossible. To you, the thought of discovering an MLM “recruiting formula” that always works might be a far-off idea. In fact, lots of trainers teach their people that no such thing exists.
But the truth is, there is a specific process that happens each time an MLM entrepreneur sponsors a new person into his downline. Whether you are aware of it or not, every sponsor goes through this exact process or “formula”. The specifics of the sponsor-client interaction may be different in any situation, but the pattern remains intact always.
The great thing about MLM leaders and power networkers is that they have learned to identify and break down this process/formula/interaction path (or whichever you want to call it). They polished and perfected each step, and by doing so, they increase the likelihood of signing up more people to their team. Here’s the four step formula for you:
FIND - It’s really funny because most networkers don’t really attempt to “find” their ideal customer or business partner. They just tell all their friends, then advertise endlessly without some sort of direction or purpose. To “find” your true prospects, you have to sit within the target market/audience that will benefit most from your product and business opportunity. Offline, this means attending events and going to places where people who are interested in Mlm Opportunities are most likely to go. Online, this means visiting discussion forums, blogs, communities, and other lairs where your ideal customers usually go. If you don’t do this initial stage correctly, your chances for Mlm Success is grim.
MEET - Once you locate your source of prospects, start by zeroing in on a single person. How do you approach this prospect? If you’re offline, would you directly approach and give a business card? Or if you’re doing business over the internet, would you instantly bombard him with affiliate links and offers about your opportunity? I found that most networkers botch this part. Their method of meeting prospects is pushy and repelling. For Internet Mlm entrepreneurs, the “meet” phase corresponds to the time when one of your website visitors subscribe to your newsletter or online mailing list. The best thing to do at this point is to remove fear and allow people to relax. That’s it. There are lots of techniques involved in meeting people, and you need to learn them.
ATTRACT - Once fear is removed and prospects are now relaxed with you, it is now time to attract them to you and your business. To do this, you have to understand human nature and the specific needs of your prospect. When you do and say things that tap into their psychological triggers and present a solution to their needs, they have no choice but to do business with you. This is not manipulative. This is how business is done. This is how people help people.
CLOSE - After desire has been built, it is now time to aid the prospect make an affirmative decision. Notice that you don’t make the decision for him, but you help him do it for himself. What’s wrong with some network marketers is that they try to rob the prospect of his right to decide for himself. Prospects (and people in general) usually don’t like being superseded when it comes to making decisions. They want to do it for themselves. So to get a yes answer, remove yourself out of the picture and focus on helping the other person decide. Play the role of a trusted adviser, a friend, and a confidante.

Mexican Drug Cartels Infiltrating Collages and High School Campuses in America

In a recent drug bust at the San Diego State University Federal agents and SDSU police culminated a yearlong investigation into drug dealing around campus and found it to be more sophisticated, more pervasive and more dangerous and far reaching than they expected or have seen before. These arrests coincided with the first anniversary of a female student freshman’s cocaine-related death.
According to local newspaper reports ninety-six suspects, including 75 SDSU students, have been arrested on drug-related charges as a result of the undercover operation, launched after Jenny Poliakoff, 19, was found dead in her off-campus apartment after a night of celebration.
One of the main suspects in this international drug investigation is Omar Castaneda, a gang member from Pomona with ties to the Mexican Tijuana drug cartels, officials said.
Castaneda, 36, after his arrest he was arraigned in San Diego Superior Court on charges of possession of cocaine for sale. He is suspected of being a major link between drugs flowing into California from Tijuana and sales at SDSU and other California campuses.
The violent Tijuana drug cartel also known as the Arellano-Felix organization (AFO) has a firm and deadly hold on all drug trafficking activities in Baja and San Diego California. Their reach controls drug smuggling in Sinaloa, Jalisco, Michoacan, Chiapas and Baja, and has strong links to San Diego, California. The AFO dispenses an estimated $1 million weekly in bribes to Mexican officials, police and Mexican army officers and maintains its own-well armed, trained, paramilitary security force. The SDSU Police Department approached the DEA and county narcotics task-force officials for assistance in December of 07, when it became clear that the drug trafficking on campus was widespread and involved Mexican organized crime drug cartels and their gang members and they feared that it far out striped their ability to handle a potentially very complicated international drug trafficking investigation.
“We were coming in contact with more types of narcotics,” SDSU Police Chief John Browning said. “If you’re serious about this, you have to go to someone who has the resources to take it to the next level.”
As the investigation was unfolding, the campus dealt with another drug-related death. An autopsy showed that Mesa College student Kurt Baker died Feb. 24 at an SDSU fraternity from oxycodone and alcohol poisoning.
“We know there’s drug use in college . . . but when you have an organization that’s actually based out of a college area, that’s a whole different thing,” said Garrison Courtney of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. “You just don’t see that.”
Research indicates that lucrative university and high school campuses are fertile markets for drug dealers. Mexican drug cartels have known this for years and are believed to have infiltrated many of America’s school campuses through cartel gang members. Federal authorities point to the Mexican drug cartels who are ultimately responsible for border violence by having cemented ties to street and prison gangs like Barrio Azteca on the U.S. side. Azteca and other U.S. gangs retail drugs that they get from Mexican cartels and Mexican gangs. Mexican gangs run their own distribution networks in the United States, and they produce most of the methamphetamine used north of the border. They have even bypassed the Colombians several times to buy cocaine directly from producers in Bolivia, Peru and even Afghanistan. These same gangs often work as cartel surrogates or enforcers on the U.S. side of the border. Intelligence suggests Los Zetas . Click on or google: They’re known as “Los Zetas have hired members of various gangs at different times including, El Paso gang Barrio Azteca, Mexican Mafia, Texas Syndicate, MS-13, and Hermanos Pistoleros Latinos to further their criminal endeavors. Authorities on both sides of the border believe many of these gang members and other surrogates of the powerful Mexican drug cartels have infiltrated and operate openly on many American school campuses particularly in states bordering Mexico including Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
One suspect, Phi Kappa Psi member Michael Montoya, worked as a community-service officer on campus and would have earned a master’s degree in homeland security next month. Another student arrested on suspicion of possessing 500 grams of cocaine and two guns was a criminal-justice major.
Authorities identified 22 SDSU students as drug dealers who sold to undercover agents. At least 17 others allegedly supplied the drugs. The rest of the suspects apparently bought or possessed illegal drugs.
Authorities said students from seven fraternities were involved in the drug ring, which operated openly across campus.
Evidence showed that “most of the members were aware of organized drug dealing occurring from the fraternity houses,” officials said. Drug agents confirmed that “a hierarchy existed for the purposes of selling drugs for money.”
Authorities singled out the Theta Chi fraternity as a hub of cocaine dealing.
One alleged dealer, Theta Chi member Kenneth Ciaccio, sent text messages to his “faithful customers” announcing that cocaine sales would be suspended over an upcoming weekend because he and his “associates” planned to be in Las Vegas, authorities said.
The same message posted “sale” prices on cocaine if transactions were completed before the dealers left San Diego.
Until yesterday, Ciaccio was featured on SDSU’s Web site promoting the Compact for Success program, which guarantees certain Sweetwater Union High School District students admission to the university if they maintain a B average.
SDSU President Stephen Weber said that even when campus police decided to ask for help from other authorities, “it wasn’t clear that we were going to end up at the point where we were today.”
Ramon Mosler, chief of the narcotics division of the District Attorney’s Office in San Diego California, said the investigation could have happened on any college campus in America. Mosler said his unit joined in because the university took the unusual step of asking for help.
“Oftentimes administrations don’t want us to do this stuff, and that’s unfortunate,” Mosler said. “I think it’s important to do this every now and then to wake people up. It raises everyone’s awareness to the dangers of drugs.”
According to the search-warrant affidavit, Thomas Watanapun sold $400 worth of cocaine to undercover agents from a Lexus sedan registered to his father in Los Angeles.
Authorities said some of the suspects made little effort to conceal their activities.
Dealers “weren’t picky about who they sold to,” Mosler said.
Also arraigned was Patrick Hawley, 20, who was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and selling cocaine near the campus, officials said.
According to a 2007 study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, nearly half of the nation’s 5.4 million full-time college students abuse drugs or alcohol at least once a month.
Law enforcement officials in San Diego say street gangs here continue to have strong ties to organized crime groups in Tijuana. A gunman killed recently in an attack in Tijuana is believed to belong to both a gang in Barrio Logan and the Arellano Felix Drug Cartel. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson reported.
For years, Mexican drug trafficking groups have recruited U.S. gang members to do everything from smuggle drugs to murder. Tijuana’s Arellano Felix Drug Cartel and a gang from San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood go back at least 15 years.
Many students enrolled in American schools are believed members of gangs many are now coming from the U.S. Military as they rotate out of the services. Many are veterans who where encouraged to join the U.S Military for combat training by Mexican cartels and gang leaders.
The cartels are confronting police and the army on a regular bases in Mexico and hope that these same tactics will soon pay off and enable them to confront the U.S Police in a much more professional, effective and dangerous ways.
Richard Valdemar, a 30-year-veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, travels the country lecturing and teaching police about military-trained gang members. Valdemar and other gang experts say gangs are encouraging members to join the military for training to learn urban warfare and learn the latest weaponry.
The military’s current emphasis on urban warfare plays into the street-fighting mentality of gangs, experts say.
“When individuals go into the military, they are taught how to use weapons, defensive tactics, and the use of a lot of sophisticated techniques,” said LaRae Quy, of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “They take that back on the streets with them. This is a legitimate concern for law enforcement.”
Valdemar cites former Camp Pendleton Marine Sgt. Jesse Quintanilla as just one high-profile example. A military court sentenced Quintanilla to death in 1996 for killing his executive officer and wounding his commanding officer.
When interrogators asked Quintanilla why he committed the crimes, Quintanilla said it was for “his brown brothers,” according to Valdemar. Quintanilla showed them a tattoo on his chest with the word “Sureno,” a reference to a California gang, according to court documents.
Army recruiting headquarters in Washington, D.C., dismiss the claims as urban myth. An Army spokesman said army background checks are extensive and weed out gang members.
The ARELLANO-Felix Organization (AFO), often referred to as the Tijuana Cartel, is one of the most powerful and aggressive drug trafficking organizations operating from Mexico; it is undeniably the most violent. More than any other major trafficking organization from Mexico, this organization extends its tentacles directly from high-echelon figures in the law enforcement and judicial systems in Mexico to street-level individuals in United States cities. The AFO is responsible for the transportation, importation and distribution of multi-ton quantities of cocaine, marijuana, as well as large quantities of heroin and methamphetamine, into the United States from Mexico. The AFO operates primarily in the Mexican states of Sinaloa (their birth place), Jalisco, Michoacan, Chiapas, and Baja California South and North.
From Baja, the drugs enter California, the primary point of embarkation into the United States distribution network.
The ARELLANO family, composed of seven brothers and four sisters, inherited the organization from Miguel Angel FELIX-Gallardo upon his incarceration in Mexico in 1989 for his complicity in the murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique Camarena. Alberto Benjamin ARELLANO-Felix assumed leadership of the family structured criminal enterprise and provides a businessman’s approach to the management of drug trafficking operations.
The AFO also maintains complex communications centers in several major cities in Mexico and the U.S. to conduct electronic espionage and counter surveillance measures against law enforcement entities. The organization employs radio scanners and equipment capable of intercepting both hard line, radio and cellular phones to ensure the security of AFO operations. In addition to technical equipment, the AFO maintains caches of sophisticated automatic weaponry secured from a variety of international sources. Speak clearly and decisively, exude confidence, share tons of value, and always make sure you have links leading back to your “home” on the web.
Classified Ads - Craigslist is a great example; it’s free online marketing at its very best. You need to get a bit creative, but with this method you don’t have to focus on producing a lot of content. An example posting in Lost + Found: “Found an amazing opportunity… Want to lose your day job for good?” Then link to your website / LCP. The MLM marketing angle is completely up to your creativity.
With the first four methods your goal is to produce constant value for your audience. Tips, tricks, methods, statistics, humor, inspiration… Anything that people will find useful should be your focus. That will lead them to follow your link to find more content and eventually you.

DEATH to Old School Home Based Business Practices - Avoiding The Bully (Shark) Marketer
It is exciting to make big money working from home. Very few actually do though for numerous reasons, and this article series is devoted to revealing why few succeed, how those that do succeed accomplish their success, and what you can expect if you really want to find success working from home.
Back to the sharks. When you get your returned phone call(s), you have no idea is calling you. But be sure of one thing, they are doing it in the hope of getting paid. Nothing wrong with getting paid, but not everyone conducts business with the same ethical standards. In fact there are way too many individuals in the industry that will tell you whatever they think you want to hear to get you to move forward with their business.
The process is simple - they call you - tell you how busy they are - then give you some websites to go see and a conference call to attend. Easy enough, anyone can learn to do that right? Then they insist that they are professionals, insist that you be the same and be at either of a couple of choices of “appointments” with them to get your questions answered. You agree on a time and then you are off to do your research.
So you go to that call, check out the website - everything looks so good, but as a normal person you have some questions; and you should. You are about to make a decision that is important, and your time and energy is the #1 resource you are risking, not the money. Money is replaceable. Your time and your emotional state and health is not.
You are really interested so you keep your follow up appointment with what seems like your harmless tour guide.. You have so many questions, and you are excited. Here’s where you can be vulnerable to the seasoned professional you are about to meet. You are about to be 3-wayed to someone that has more experience at “closing”. They intend to “close” you, which means, have you pull out your credit card or you get sent to the bank to get certified funds.
Meanwhile you are thinking you are just trying to get questions answered so you can consider your options.
The call comes as scheduled, the person that you first spoke with then tells you they are new to the business (in most cases) or says that they want to show you what kind of up line support you are going to get when you join, “so if you don’t mind, I’d like to bring in John Hammerhead into the conversation. He’s a great guy, a lot of fun to work with, and very successful. He’s teaching me the ins and outs of this business, and will be teaching you”.
Now in your mind something is a bit amiss right? The yellow caution light is flashing in your mind, and your original contact person can sense new resistance developing in you; and he/she should. You built rapport with that first person that called you. You wanted to speak with them more, and now here comes someone you don’t know. You are about to experience the home based business shark bite.
Of course John Hammerhead is very busy so as you ask questions, he gives you short answers, and says “don’t worry - you’ll learn all of that when you get started”. Get started you are thinking? I’m just still learning about all of this home business stuff, your brain shouts at you.
Then it happens, John Hammerhead goes for the “BITE” (close) - “well let’s get you started?”
If John Hammerhead has done his job, all along the way, he has painted the picture that this is easy, just follow the “SYSTEM”, and we’ll be here to help all along the way.
Meanwhile you have not had enough time to Google the company or research any other businesses. You are not ready … John Hammerhead is ready and expects you to be too because ” he’s looking for decisive people”. Who is this all about anyway? It’s about you, your life, your goals, your dreams - not John Hammerhead.
For so many people that is the first experience, you pull out your credit card and go to the website and sign up. You just signed up for your first home based business. It will probably not be your last.
At the end of the call you are congratulated for being decisive and committed to your future, etc. Meanwhile, John Hammerhead just bit a chuck out of your checking account. And you can be guaranteed that, if you enrolled in your home business this way, then you will almost certainly regret it at some point, and write it off as lesson 1 at some point in your not to distant future.
My first experience at learning about home business was from watching a TV commercial late at night. I went to the website, put my information in, and almost immediately my phone rang. People from about 8 different companies called me. I connected with one particular guy that seemed honest enough.
I had very specific criteria. No selling to friends and family and drop ship completely from Internet ordering were the headlines. Jim the “Vitamin salesman” was not resonating with me, but I figured IF it was totally turnkey online, it would just be another stream of income. After all, people buy lots of vitamins.
Jack Greatwhite just kept saying yes. I went to their call. Everyone was making all this money, it sounded great. When Jack Greatwhite called me back, he already had Bill Thebullshark on the phone with him. I was instantly in a 2 on 1. I re-capped my criteria, and told them that if everything I heard was true I was in. They said yes again. I ordered the “IPB decision kit” for $500. They got me to go ahead and signup for the marketing system, for a year (big mistake), but I felt these guys were being honest with me.
When I got my kit, the first thing I did was read the “manual” that came with it (very unusual for me), but I wanted to see their marketing model. And there is it was, on page 3 “circle of Influence”, friends and family, blah, blah, blah. Right about the time I finished reading the manual, I was packing up everything to ship back, and Jack Greatwhite just happened to call. I questioned him on the “drop ship” program and then he said I needed to either sell X dollars in product first (of course by having them all shipped to my house first) for a couple of thousand dollars, or buy my way in at a higher level.
I confronted him, and essentially politely called him a liar. He back peddled and got Bill Thebullshark back on the phone, and they settled me down a little bit. At the time I didn’t realize they were trying to get me past the 72 hour period with which I could get a refund (which they successfully did).
A week later, I called to cancel everything, request my refund (that’s when I found out that the 10 day period began when I put my credit card in the website, not when I received my product evaluation kit. It was now day 11. I wanted a refund on the marketing system. Of course I had clicked on an agreement that said it was non-refundable. So it was a $750 lesson and introduction into the world of the dangerous shark infested waters of MLM. One year later the old wound was opened and salted when the company that provides that company’s marketing system started charging my credit card without my permission. After an hour or so of my time on the phone, I finally got the charges reversed. Unbelievable.
Are all people in Network Marketing and home based business sharks and pilferers? Absolutely not. In fact, when 4 months later I looked again after responding to what I thought was a job ad in the newspaper. I saw the sharks coming and got back in the boat fast.
This whole exercise though led me to find a business that was legitimate, and I was able to do very well at. But I swore to myself on day 1 that if I ever had to resort to those tactics to make money, I would quit the business. (which I did in February 2007).
The best advice is take your time looking, don’t let a seasoned “Networker” (shark) bully you or make you feel inadequate because you want to “think” about a particular business. Thinking about it is exactly what you should do along with some Serious Due Diligence (Research). How to go about this is the subject of another article.
I was taken advantage of because at the time I was moving “away” from a situation, and everything sounded better than where I was. By the time I picked my right business, I was moving “towards” a goal, and therefore no one was able to push or bully me.
Either you or someone you know has been the victim of a GUMP (Good Unsuspecting Money People) hunter in MLM or direct sales, creating much of the negative view of the industry.
Some network marketing, direct sales, Mlm Companies or other home based business opportunities in many cases have tremendous value propositions. Most do not, and they are populated with lots of hungry sharks.
