MLM Mentors Essentials: Treat Your Team With Respect

As discussed in a past article, in order to have respect for yourself you need to be honest with yourself, have integrity, and be a leader. Once you accomplish these steps you must examine respecting others. The three necessary components that form your relationships of respect with others are outlook, the mentorship relationship, and the pull vs. push concept.

The primary likely issue in respecting others is your outlook or paradigm on life itself. This topic has a great deal more depth than I can articulate here, but here is what you need to realize. In every situation you have assumptions some conscious, some not, some good, some bad. These assumptions shape what you experience.

Such as If I believe Matt is a jerk oodles of the things he says will annoy me. Does this have to do with him or does it have to do with me thinking he is a jerk? How is it that he irritates me? Can he MAKE me mad?

This idea of assumptions is not always a bad thing so for now just start to examine some of the negative assumptions that you may be making. In relation to respecting others here are several questions you need to ask.

Are most people honest or dishonest?

Why do I respect someone?

How is your respect earned?

Are family member entitled to your respect?

When is it reasonable not to respect someone?

Do I need a reason to respect someone or a reason not to?

These are all issues you need to set a personal definition for. Just keep in mind that all MLM mentors need to consider the reliability of their own personal view to truly be a humble leader. It takes a smart man to know how little he truly knows. Take responsibility for yourself, your mood, your actions, and your time.

The second step after examining your viewpoint is to understand the mentorship relationship. You are there for your downline as a coach. They are not your employees, and you are not there to manage them. Your job is to lead by example and help those who choose to be coached by you. Meaning you should never be pursuing your downline if they are not committed. Inform them yes, but allow them to pursue you.

You can never push anyone in MLM so if you are one of the thousands and thousands of MLM mentors out there remember to first connect and then pull. Imagine a tow truck mounting a snow plow on the front and becoming a push truck! Not only would this not work, but you would damage the vehicle you were struggling to move. Hmmm … is there a metaphor here?

To cut a long story short, here is a point to assess within a mentoring relationship that is quite an art. This art is giving someone what they NEED rather than what they WANT. I would bet most of the time they might not agree with you, but that is why you have to recognize when someone is ready to hear what they need to hear. At the end of the day, if they are not ready they are still going to hear what they want, but it is your job to unearth what they have yet to recognize.
