Multi Level Marketing vs Direct Sales

MLM, also known as Multi Level or Network Marketing, and Direct Sales are two distinct segments of the booming home based business industry. More and more people are looking at starting their own home based business and with thousands of companies to choose from it can be a daunting task to pick not only a company, but the correct business model for you. In order for you to make the correct choice you must be fully educated the two types of business models I have detailed here.

Direct Sales and Mlm Companies typically operate in what is called the home based business industry. Most of you have most likely been presented the opportunity to take part in one or both. Some examples of companies would be Monavie or Herbalife (MLM) and Liberty League or Wealth Masters (Direct Sales). As I mentioned earlier, they are very different so let’s take a look at each and go over the features and beneifts of each before comparing them.

MLM, sometimes referred to as Network Marketing, is a business model where a person is allowed to not only be a customer, but also have the opportunity to resell the products. In addition to being able to resell the products and earn commission on those sales, a person is able to sign up other reps and earn an override on their sales. Now is where the “multi-level” come in to play because it doesn’t stop there. The original rep can also earn overrides on the reps his reps sign up and essentially build a team of reps he or she is earning overrides on.

This typically will go down several levels of overrides. Most plans pay on average, a 5% commission or override on these teams and reps are required to purchase a certain amount of product each month, called an autoship, in order to qualify to get paid. The payouts are small in real dollars, but they count on getting a small piece of hundreds or thousands of reps long term. These plans can get very complicated, but this is the general concept of how it works.

Direct Sales on the other hand is what its name implies, direct sales of the company product(s) to the customer. The rep or associate will typically profit the difference between the wholesale and retail cost. Where Mlm Plans are generally complicated for the average person outside the industry to understand, direct sales plans are easy to explain as it mirrors what happens everyday in the marketplace.

Direct Sales companies are noted for typically having high end products with higher price tags, but also pay a higher commission. For example, Liberty League International has a product that retails for $1,495 dollars and the wholesale cost is $495, which will pay the associate an upfront commission of $1,000.

Most companies have some type of training sales attached to the new associate before he or she can make the commission on his own sales, much like in the financial industry with insurance agents and brokers. Once a rep has completed training for that product he would be qualified for life to receive pay on that product sale. These companies usually have 2 or 3 additional product at a higher price that an associate can upgrade to where additional commissions are earned by the original associate.

Again, these are rudimentary examples, but you should get the idea of how the two work now.

How do they compare? MLM is a lower barrier to entry and many see that as a plus, it also requires a lot more reps on your team to earn a significant income, sometimes up to 200 just to make $1,000. It will also take you time to build a team this size so the upfront income is minimal. The MLM leaders promote walk away income once your team is built, but that is simply a myth that doesn’t really exist in the end.

Direct Sales companies require more startup expenses, but the ongoing cost can be lower after a period of time. They offer the potential of higher level earnings in a much shorter time, but except for one maybe two companies, don’t provide the residual income potential a solid Mlm Company will. Some of the top companies do provide a significant passive income stream.

In the end, it is personal preference. While I feel one is the better option, that is another article altogether. One should evaluate the company management, the products and the systems they use to market in order to find the correct fit for them. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, but both are great options if they match up with you!

Mlm Training: Generate Mlm Leads With A Lazy Downline?

Are your kind offers of help to generate MLM leads and MLM training in general falling on deaf ears?

You know, having a lazy downline used to be the quickest route to grey hair and stomach complaints known to the MLM community. I remember taking some of the world’s least motivated Mlm Downline builders to hotel meetings and major functions. They used to duck behind a pillar after five minutes, petrified I’d introduce them to anyone successful.

Usually they were outside (in all weathers) with the smokers, even those that didn’t smoke. Obviously they preferred the atmosphere of stale tobacco to the sound of motivated and committed upline telling them they could be successful!

But a lot has changed since then. For one thing, MLM training is not so dominated by huge get-togethers, with a sizeable ‘cajoled’ contingent. Some of the world’s biggest MLM downline builders Generate Mlm Leads Online in such numbers that it is this type of MLM training that is in higher demand rather than tips on how to successfully hand out a DVD to ‘Nigel from Accounts’.

Another past problem with lazy downline members was the fact that their laziness would duplicate downwards. So as we tried to create an ‘on-message’ group of enthusiastic MLM downline builders under these individuals, the apathy would dilute anything we said to them. As the new people would be friends of our lazy downline, our positive influence would be drastically diluted.

It seems crazy today that some of us allowed lazy downline members to sap our enthusiasm to such an extent. Maybe you remember that feeling of leaving a large gathering full of revved and motivated distributors and thinking ‘I wish my own group had even one percent of that’.

Yes, in the old days, trying to crowbar Mlm Training Tools into the hands of our lazy downline wasted so much time, it wasn’t even funny. I was expecting people to generate MLM leads when it wasn’t even certain they were generating a pulse.

Another thing lazy downline members would never dream of doing was retailing products. Some would give me a look that would strip paint. The notion of actually doing something was the element of the MLM training that met with the most dogged resistance!

Any attempts by me to generate MLM leads ‘under’ my lazy downline where also sabotaged. Maybe they were supreme MLM downline builders ‘in the rough’. But there’s rough and rough, isn’t there. It was all so much hard work for which there was no reward. I’m getting welled up here!

But these days lazy downline members are not going to hasten our ageing process and make us question what on earth made us think we could ever be succesful MLM downline builders. Even more than that, they can be precisely the kind of distributors we do want on board! Eh?

It’s true. It’s not an uncommon human failing to want the rewards of a large independent income stream such as the big-hitting MLM downline builders enjoy whilst doing next to nothing to attain it. In days gone by we’d say something trite to them like ‘the only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.’

But now, it is possible to generate MLM leads, leveraging off a lazy downline, giving you and them exactly what they want. Sure it might cost them a little of their cash, but for a lazy downline the idea of having negligible work to do and zero rejection to face is very seductive. Why not give them that? They may become ambitious over time. but their unwillingness to ‘buy in’ on faith at the outset no longer means there’s no role for the lazy in your success. Bring them in!

They may never generate MLM leads for themselves and never really become MLM downline builders, but contrary to what outdated MLM training would have us believe in the past, a lazy downline can contribute hugely to your success and let’s face it, that opens up one enormous market!

When you’re involved in MLM you won’t be just trying to sell the opportunity to other people, you’ll also be trying to sell the actual product! If you don’t believe in the product and use it yourself you’re going to have a very difficult time earning a great income.


The best situation is when the company either gives you the product for being an affiliate, or when they allow you to have a substantial discount. That way you can freely try the product and learn to love it while you’re building your business.

Mlm Success Essentials: Elements of a Solid Mlm Marketing Strategy

Have you developed a strategy to market your Mlm Products and business opportunity? Who are you targeting? What do they want? Where can they be found? What pitches will appeal to them? Long term success in the Mlm Industry is predicated on knowing the answers to these questions inside and out.

While you can create a small Mlm Business in a non-targeted way, talking to friends and family and everyone within 3 feet of you, you’ll never build a huge downline using this tactic unless you get super lucky. It’s OK to gamble on the side, but the majority of your time should be spent on executing a specific marketing strategy.

Always Craft a Marketing Strategy Before a Marketing Plan

Put first things first. As excited as you are to get started, a plan is nothing without a strategy. First establish the WHAT (strategizing), then work on the HOW (planning). Take, for example, the case of telecommunications sales. You could choose to target customers of a certain carrier with bad service in the area. That is the WHAT - the marketing strategy. In order to reach them, you might design a web page using your city name and the carrier’s name as keywords and include a ’send me info on reducing my bill’ opt-in box. That is the HOW - the marketing plan. The plan will guide your day-to-day activities. The strategy should guide ALL your activities taken as a whole.

Do you need a clear Marketing strategy to acheive MLM Success?”

In a word - YES.

Proper marketing creates a desire for a service or product. To do this, you must connect to a goal the prospect wants to achieve. Once a prospect sees that your product is the solution to a specific problem that they care about, there should be no further objections as you close them.

1. What issues do people care about?
Always start with a problem that people worry about and work backwards. Have you ever made a list of the problems each of your products solves? Do they provide income protection in the event of an accident? Do they save money on telecommunications services people buy anyway? Do they help slow the aging process? Do they teach search engine optimization? Do they reduce cholesterol?
Remember, it has to be a problem people care about. And, they must care enough about the problem to take action. Someone whose doctor has just told them they have high cholesterol is generally ready to act. Someone that was charged $40 in overage fees last month is hopefully ready to act. Someone whose brother just got hurt and cannot work is probably ready to act. A network marketer struggling to generate leads in the cold market is probably ready to act.

2. Which problems should your marketing strategy target?
After you list all the problems that your products and services can solve, get specific about which you will target. Pick 1 to 3 problems to target. numerous factors go into making this decision. The pivotal factors you’ll want to evaluate are:

1) The number of people with the issue. How large is the market?
2) The magnitude of the problem. How motivated are people to solve the problem?
3) The competition. How many other competing solutions are there for this issue?
4) Your unique skills and expertise.

There is no right or wrong answer here. A large market where there is little urgency to change may underperform a small market where the people are eager to move quickly to solve a problem. This last sentance describes most network marketers making them one of your best target markets in most cases.

3. Where do people with these problems hang out?
Although you aren’t quite ready to move on to marketing planning, you do need to determine where you’ll find your target customers in the strategy phase. Can you reach them? If yes, what are those groups and where do these people hang out.

The Internet is one of several answers to this question and for most network marketers it is the most powerful answer. The Internet is full of niches of people expressly looking for solutions to their problems. Use Google’s free External Keyword Research Tool or the paid Wordtracker application to study the niches. How many people are searching for ‘reducing cholesterol’ or ’save for retirement’ or ‘eliminate wrinkles’ or ‘free long distance calling’? Next look at how many other pages you are competeing with for each issue.

Lots of newbies waste an enormous amount of time and money designing web pages that nobody visits because they don’t invest in truly learning Internet marketing. Please don’t begin until you comprehend the basics of searching. It is possible to be on the first page of Google, but it requires a focused niche strategy to do it.

What are Top Tier Sales?

What separates top tier direct selling from a typical MLM product is price point.  Top tier sales are simply put products that cost more than a typical Multi-level Marketing product.  Generally speaking top tier products are in the thousand to ten thousand dollar range.  What does this mean from a sales and commission perspective?  Just as you might expect that commission on a top tier sale is much higher than that of a typical MLM product- again it is more likely in the thousands of dollars. 

Dead downline

The beauty of top tier sales is that there is little emphasis placed on building a downline.  In MLM most of your energy is focused on your downline and rightly so if you’re interested in building a residual income.  The problem with this model is that in this day and age the internet has made this very problematic.  The internet has made MLM unsustainable.  The reason this is is because there is so much access to information that people can see where the next big OPPORTUNITY is.  If you blink, you just may open your eyes to an empty downline and then you start back at zero. 

In top tier direct sales you don’t have to rely on a downline for your income.  You get paid commissions on your sales which amount to a higher income up front due to the higher price point.  You have the same potential for residual income you just don’t rely heavily on your downline to produce your income.

Understand that it is a true, bonified business with all the work and effort that a business requires.  The tough part can be separating the facts from the hype.  If it sounds too good to be true IT IS; this cannot be stressed enough.  Finally, never forget people are trying to SELL you something.

What is Network Marketing and how do you do it?

i really don’t know what network marketing is but i heard about it and know that it can make you money so how do i do network marketing and what do i need for it and also are there any college classes or degrees i can get to teach me network marketing i also heard you need to sell a product what if you don’t have a product and some examples of Network Marketing Business’s and an example of the average salary of a new mid and experienced network marketer

Network Marketing! Ahh, so how much negative have you heard about this type of business? Well there is lots of it! Fortunately its not so much true. I will tell you the best book I read about network marketing is called “Mailbox Money” its a small paperback and you could finish reading it in a night. You have to be a hard worker, ambitious and self motivated. I am a business owner through a Network Marketing Company. I will not even bring someone on my team (even if they ask) unless I believe they have entrepreneurial qualities. Its a waste of my time as well as theirs. Its not for everyone. Money doesnt flow in right away..well at least with most people. Its very possable to gain a good income fast, depending on you. It is one of the best ways build residual income for life. Its basically YOU building a TEAM and a lot of people of moving a little product.
#1st step to choosing a company. Do your research first! Not by googling it and reading all the crap out there. You will find negative feedback on every single MLM (multi level marketing) company out there. Go to that company’s site. How long have they been in business? There is always the “next” big thing coming and then its gone and so are all the hard working people.
#2- Whatever the product be…it must have a demand with a need for more products. Preferably monthly orders, consumable products. What is the market trend for this product? Do your research. If its a juice…think about it…how many companies have a “super juice” how will you tell a new customer yours is better? Why is it different? Competetion is good, that means there is a want for that product. But what sets it apart from competitors?

Average income…anywhere from a couple hundred a month –to—sky’s the limit. I wont even throw $$$’s out there. Because your likely to be skeptical. I see it in my business a lot.
