Starting a home business that is primed for success can be intimidating to the uninitiated.  It involves designing a good website, paying for the domain, and learning the intricacies of Internet marketing.  So the next best thing for newbies is to go into this business by testing the waters first.  This means selling before setting up one’s own website.

Multi Level Marketing vs Direct Sales

MLM, also known as Multi Level or Network Marketing, and Direct Sales are two distinct segments of the booming home based business industry. More and more people are looking at starting their own home based business and with thousands of companies to choose from it can be a daunting task to pick not only a company, but the correct business model for you. In order for you to make the correct choice you must be fully educated the two types of business models I have detailed here.

Direct Sales and Mlm Companies typically operate in what is called the home based business industry. Most of you have most likely been presented the opportunity to take part in one or both. Some examples of companies would be Monavie or Herbalife (MLM) and Liberty League or Wealth Masters (Direct Sales). As I mentioned earlier, they are very different so let’s take a look at each and go over the features and beneifts of each before comparing them.

MLM, sometimes referred to as Network Marketing, is a business model where a person is allowed to not only be a customer, but also have the opportunity to resell the products. In addition to being able to resell the products and earn commission on those sales, a person is able to sign up other reps and earn an override on their sales. Now is where the “multi-level” come in to play because it doesn’t stop there. The original rep can also earn overrides on the reps his reps sign up and essentially build a team of reps he or she is earning overrides on.

This typically will go down several levels of overrides. Most plans pay on average, a 5% commission or override on these teams and reps are required to purchase a certain amount of product each month, called an autoship, in order to qualify to get paid. The payouts are small in real dollars, but they count on getting a small piece of hundreds or thousands of reps long term. These plans can get very complicated, but this is the general concept of how it works.

Direct Sales on the other hand is what its name implies, direct sales of the company product(s) to the customer. The rep or associate will typically profit the difference between the wholesale and retail cost. Where Mlm Plans are generally complicated for the average person outside the industry to understand, direct sales plans are easy to explain as it mirrors what happens everyday in the marketplace.

Direct Sales companies are noted for typically having high end products with higher price tags, but also pay a higher commission. For example, Liberty League International has a product that retails for $1,495 dollars and the wholesale cost is $495, which will pay the associate an upfront commission of $1,000.

Most companies have some type of training sales attached to the new associate before he or she can make the commission on his own sales, much like in the financial industry with insurance agents and brokers. Once a rep has completed training for that product he would be qualified for life to receive pay on that product sale. These companies usually have 2 or 3 additional product at a higher price that an associate can upgrade to where additional commissions are earned by the original associate.

Again, these are rudimentary examples, but you should get the idea of how the two work now.

How do they compare? MLM is a lower barrier to entry and many see that as a plus, it also requires a lot more reps on your team to earn a significant income, sometimes up to 200 just to make $1,000. It will also take you time to build a team this size so the upfront income is minimal. The MLM leaders promote walk away income once your team is built, but that is simply a myth that doesn’t really exist in the end.

Direct Sales companies require more startup expenses, but the ongoing cost can be lower after a period of time. They offer the potential of higher level earnings in a much shorter time, but except for one maybe two companies, don’t provide the residual income potential a solid Mlm Company will. Some of the top companies do provide a significant passive income stream.

In the end, it is personal preference. While I feel one is the better option, that is another article altogether. One should evaluate the company management, the products and the systems they use to market in order to find the correct fit for them. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, but both are great options if they match up with you!

Treat Your Business Like a “Business”

MLM Marketing is a great way to earn from home and is the only option for many people. Discourage interruptions. As anyone involved in MLM marketing knows, this is the single most difficult thing to do. The kids need something or the dog barks to be let out and back in. The wife or roommate stops by to remind you of something, ask a question or start a conversation. You want to make it clear you are at work. Pretend you are at the office the same way you would if you have a J-O-B that you drive to everyday. You wouldn’t be at home so keep it that way. If that doesn’t work think of using a “DO NOT DISTURB” sign and don’t acknowledge anyone or anything that could distract you from working.

MLM Marketing Rule #4

Beware of scams. If you are new to MLM marketing or home business in general I would advise you to beware of an opportunity that says “work from home” or any variation there of. Remember, an employer is looking for someone with a specific skillset not for people who work at home in general. If you read something that is too general more than likely you will be required to send or invest some money and the job will never materialize. There isn’t a job on this planet that should require you to put money up front because you are looking to earn it, not spend it.

Every MLM website or forum you visit today you can not notice it. Someone somewhere we’ll be mentioning a new company launch. Though I don’t profess to be a prognosticator, there are a few simple things that you can check out on a new company that if cannot pick a winner, surely can reveal a loser.

First of all, the most important thing you need to check is the owners and its management team. Learn their names and find out if they have any previous experience in the Multilevel Marketing industry or in any business at all. The more experience they have and the closer to our industry that is, the better. Also don’t forget to check out if there is anything negative at their past. If they lack integrity or you can’t trust them needless to say that you should stay away. It’s Incredible what you can find about almost anyone if you Google his name these days.

Second, check the compensation plan. It’s an important factor to the stability of the business and it’s future expansion. If it rewards too much the “big guns” compared to the average distributor, its expansion can pretty soon come to an halt and so it’s profitability. Make it the other way and there is no incentive for real progress, so it may never really take off in numbers and in profits, of course.

Third, although the product is not that important, what matters is the segment of the market that is targeting. Is this a market where demand exists? What is the competition? If there is no competition, why? If it’s fierce how the company is going to differentiate and brand the product so it would stand out from competition?

Fourth, is there a training program? Without one, new distributors, would really have a problem start making sales and in this case much of the training responsibility, if not all, would fall into your shoulders for those you sponsor. Which of course can cost you in more time that can cut off the expansion speed of your organization.

I am looking for a true work at home job (no insurance, or MLM, no downlines) any ideas?

I knew a woman put a Red Light in her porch light, not sure what she did, but, darn she made alot of money! Another good thing to try is selling on Ebay or something similar. You can find things in yard sales and auctions and make a profit. The main thing here is being organized to handle the volume of Buyers. Browse Ebay and find what people are interested in and pay better money for, Barbie Dolls NOT a good seller (Bisque Dolls are), Sporting Goods are. Old things sell good too. You will be surprised at the amount of money you will make if you have plenty of things to sell that WILL sell. Start small to learn the Dance and Build up as you can handle more products. True, you may have to beat the Bushes to find your Products, but, it can work if your commited, organized AND know what to sell. Not a get rich thing, but, you can make a decent living. Beware of any TAX obligations your State may require.

It would appear that the Arbonne® secrets can actually be considered more as smart business practices. The actual Arbonne® website itself (not one of the ones posted by consultants advertising that they sell Arbonne® products), is, as mentioned earlier, very simple and direct in its approach.

One might say it is “refreshing”, as the site does not bombard the senses with pop-ups, flashing words, bold, intrusive advertisements, or other distractions. It merely presents the facts about the company, as well as information on the products.

Again, the thing that makes the website unique in its own way is its forthright, frank admission that it does take work to be successful. This is something that is not often seen in the MLM field, unfortunately, so when it does appear, it certainly makes for a nice change. It is hoped that Arbonne® continues this.
